1IO US EI I OLD RECEIPTS.

When a carpat in taken up to be cleaned, the floor boneath it is very inuch c-nvered with dust. This dust is very and dry, and poisonous to the lunpx. Before removing it, sprinkle the floor with very dilute carbolic acid, to kill any poisonous germs that may bo printout, anil so thoroughly disinfect tho floor and render it sweet.

RICK I'ITDDIWO.—A pnddiug without •JGGS can LWJ inade by taking one enp of rioo to one-half gallon of milk and one ftip of HUiiar. liako until the rice is done. think it much nicer than with cggH. Flavor to your taste.

To BKIOHTKN STRAW MATTING AND ON, OM»TII.—CJive the maUing a thorough washing with salt and water, using one pint of salt in a pail of water, Dry |tiickly with a soft cloth, Hub your oil cloth with a cloth dipped in milk, first having scrubbed it withso.ip and warm water. It wll'ithoh look as bright as when new.

How TO OI.EAIF PANKKTH.--Pour two largo tablespoontuls of borax and a pint bowl of soft soap into tub of cold water. When dissolved, put in a pnirof blankets and let them remain overnight. Next day rub and drain thoin ou*, and rlnso thoroughly in two waters and hang them to dry. Do not wring thorn.

KIJOATINO J.HI.ANO*--Yolks of seven eggs to one quart of milk, one out of sugar, a little salt, and flavor with lemon. at all together, and set in a kettle of wutor extra from the kettle it is boiled In. Beat the whites of tho eggs to a stiff froth, and pile in heaps on top of the boiled milk after it has been put in the float glasses. This will inake twelve glasses full. They lofk very pretty set in a circle round a bouquet of flowers, in tho ceutor or at each end of the table.

HAI.HKD CONNECTICUT DOUGHNUTS.— Heat a pint of milk just lukewarm, and stir into it a small cup of melted lard, and sifted flour till it is a thick batter: add a small cup of domestic yoast. and keep it warm till tho batter is light then work in'o it four boaten eggs, two eups of sugar rolled free from lumps, a teasnoo.iful of salt and two of cinnamon. When the whole Is well mixed, knead iu wheat flour till about #H stiff as blscolt dough. Set it where it will keep warm till of a spongy lightness then roll tho dongh out half an iuoh thick, and cut it into cakes. Let them remain' till light, then fry thom iu hot lard.

FASHION AXD MORALS*® It is common to attribute to the laws of fashion much ot the immoralities of society but an argument was made bolore a Committee of Congress, some days ago, to the effect that polygamy, if left alone by the fttato, would soon be cured by tho Introduction of the Oontile fksulons of female dress. Until the opening of the Union Pacific Kailway, tali was sn isolated State the majority of tho Mormons never having any communion with, and raroly ever soelng, any Gentiles. The railroad, however, has chftnged this condition of affairs. Kailroads run through the Territory the Mormons aro brought into daily contact with tho Oentile poppulatlon, residents as well as travellers (Jontlle customs have been introduced, and last, but not least, the fVishions ot the Gentile women. It Is said that the Queen of Madagascar Is a subscriber to Harper'* linear, and regularly examtns the chart of pnttorns and the plates of novelties In style and materials. It can hardly be expected that the Mormon women nan be less curious and leas interested In a matter which has engrossed the female mind from all time. The changes of spring, summer. fall, and winter hats, bonnetfe, cloaks, dresses, and boot*, with the ad-

ilair,

uncts of laces, trimmings, lewelry, and hare an effect upon Mormondom that threatens annihilation to polygamy. Already there are discontented dames who assert they "have nothing to wear," and who resent the economy of tht'ir former lift* by asking their husbands, can thov be ex pec too to appear twice in a publio place in the same drees? The superiority of the monogamlc system becomes evident to the female "mind of Utah when it consider* that a husband can supply one wife with all that she needs in the way of dresa much more readily than he can two, three, or half-a-dowm wives and when they compate their comparatively plain, inexpensive, and Incomplete wardrwbe* with those of their Gentile sisters, the system of polygamy ceases to have any charms. What is Joseph Smith's revelations to a woman woo wants a Dolly Varden and ran not get It, particularly when other women b«ve them? It was gravely argued before the Committee that the introduction into Utah of the fashionable styles of drfetsiwg by the (lentils women would do more* to disgust lbs Mormon then all the enactment fomen, it was argued, will never voluntarily submit to a system which denies them that elegance of drees, and variety thereof, which Is enjoyed by their neighbors sod, as no Mormon can afford such a style to more than one woman, there wfl! be a general revolt of the female Mormon* against polygamy, and in favor of one hasbend to one wife,— [Chicago Tribune.

WOUlu uo niun ui^wi II women with polygamy tl preaching and statutory that could be devised. w«

"LOJCO MAY IT WAVR."—A joung I mother was In the babit of airing the baby's clothes at the window. Her husband didn't like it, and believing that 1/ she saw ber practice as others saw it, she woald desist, ho,so directed their afternoon walk a» tq brjng the 1 nursery windrtw into full View from I tho central part of town. Stopping abI ruptly, he pointed to the offending I linen flapping unconsciously in the breeze, ana asked, sarcastically: "My dear, what is that displayed in our window?" "Why," she replied, "that is the fl of our union."

Conquered by this pungont retort, he saluted the fl by a swing of bis bat, and pressing bis wife's arm closer within bis own, said, as they walked homeward: "And long may it wave!"

SUNSHINE ANDSLKEP.—Sleepless persons should court the sun. The very worst soporific is laudanum, aud the very best, sunshine. Therefore it is very plain that poor sleepers shonld pass as many hours as possible in the I shade. Many women are martyrs, and yet they do not know it. They shut the sunshine out of their houses and their hearts, they wear veils, they carry parasols, they do nil possible to keep off the most potent intlueuoe which is intended to give them strength, and beauty, and cheerfulness. Is it not time to change all this, and so get get color and roses in their cheeks, strength in our weak backs, and courage in our timid souls? The women of America are pale and delicate, but with the aid of sunlight they may be blooming and strong.
