There was nothing said on the subject next morning it was not one fordi*cushion iu thi* presence of servants ana children only wjtli his good-bye kiss, Dick said, cirelessly, "I shall write to John to-day.''
His wife went aliout ber duties with a sore heart. All the mother within her stirred into rebellion, and with a dozen wild and impotent schemes in ber brain, alt centering at last in tbe determination to write to ber brother herself, .nd beg him not to take ber child. One or two bitter tears dropped on Johnnie's white head more than once during the day, and his mother felt that all his mischief, all the trouble he gave her, was naught in tbe balance against bis precious little way and his baby loVe tor herself.
Dick did not come home to dinner, and the iy dragged wearily through. Nigbt came, and when sbe beard bis key in the door, she grew sick and faint with the agony of apprehension. The first words were, "I wrote to John to-day."
She sank on the floor in a passion of tears. My baby! my baby!" sbe sobbed. "Oh, Dickj it will kill me to take him away from me J"
The next moment she was gathered hi her husb tnd's arms, while he added: "And 1 told him that, although we fully appreciated his kind ofte, we couid not spare our boy."
Tbere was silence for a few minutes, then his wife whispered through ber tears: "Oh, Dick, I shall never feel poor again while we have our children. I could bear or do anything rather than give them up." And Mr. Jones made answer, '"Forgive me, my darling, if the lessou 1 meant to teach you was too hard lor you."
A PETTICOAT MOB IN IOWA. Last night was one of the most if not the most eventful night ever witnessed in Bstherville, The two saloons in this place had become obnoxious to some, and of that number the women formed tbe greater and, it has proved, by far tbe mosl resolute and stronger portion. Mutteriugs have for some time been heard ag.unst the dealing in intoxicating beverages. And last night the women of the place, to the number of twenty-five—mothers, daughters and wivos from the most worthy families of the place, proceeded, without warning, to tie object of their dislike, and, after light resistanee otlered at the first saloon, made quick and effective work, in the demolishing of casks, decanters, |ars, bottles, etc., and poured the contents into the street. For the distance of over a block, tbe gutter was swimming with whisky, and the interiors of tho saloons presented a scene of ruin that one seldom beholds in a community. After completing the work they had set out to do the ladies quietly returned to their boines. But tiiey still exprtss tludr determination to persevere in the temperance cause, and to ropeat this per.orrnance whenever it may become necessary."—[Estherville Vindicator.
TKN thousand human beings set forth together on their journey. Aflen ten yearn on-lhird have disappeared. At the middle point of the common measure of lite but ilf are .ntill upon the road. Faster and faster, as the ranks
row thinner, they that remain till now came weary, lie down and rise no more. At three score and ten a hand of some lour hundred yet struggle on. At ninety these have been reduced to a handful of thirty trembling patriarchs. Year alter year they fall in diminishing numlM'Vs. One lingers, perhaps, a lonely marvel, till tho century is over. We Took again and the work of death 1-4 finished.
