HUNTING A BUSHRANGER— HOW THEY CiUOHT HIM.
An Australian Adventure.
Some yernn »fr*» I happened to be trawling up the Dirliug river, in New South wdes, en routeto a station where I hud an eng-Kt*in«iit as drover. 1 ar"v rived, one afternoon, at a station, tbe own^r of whieh whs a friend of mine.
By tbe *t-Hbl»-yird a group of four m«*n were standing. eyeing «orae cattle ,, which bad appirently been just run in •by the stook.n^n.
Foremost among the group stood my 4 friend Jon»-s, ntid on discovering me be came forward ind shook hands heartily, fii He then introduced me to a fresh-look-ing vouh n«m**d Newcbome.who had •not long If it England, and wno had on a p«ir of glove*, and—for tbe busb, •mirabtle dictu—a coat and collar. '•tJoine down to tbe house, old fellow," said Jones, "and I will send
Dick to put your horses on soaae good feed." I preferred, however, to take charge *f iny cattle n»onally, as my horses were the most precious property I possessed. "Hv the way," said Jones, "have you heard th «t that brute, Black Sam, shot poor Mi'Killop through the lung* the other day? H* died almost directly."
SHn alter this I left tbe station with my horses, having been directed to the beat place for feed «»nd water. I had to oros* the creek at the ford, and, aa they were oool, I let them drink the clear, cold fluid. A short distance farther on I wtir my landmark, an old hut. Hero 1 hobbled my horses, and left thein nibbling the tioh grass. A thin column of smoke was curling from tbe bark chimney of the hut, and thinking that the tire belonged to one of the shepherls I turned for the purpose of getting a light. 1 was JUKI going to give tbe door a push, whi-n It «s flung open, and a swarthy, bl ick-bearded man stood in the doorway, with a revolver leveled at my defenseless bead. "Up with your binds," said this worthy, "and don't move, unless you want a hole drilled in yer carcass! Walk In and s.t down," was the next order and hiving sat down with iny hands high in the air. on an old box in the but, wbich did duty aa either chair or table, tbe mint ben said coolly, "1'in I Hack Bun, and I want one of yer horses—inaybo both. Mine's knocked up. Now, then, ver've got to answer some questions. Where do yer come from? Where are ver goin' to? und who's at the station
f"
I answered the questions with great urbanity and politeness. "Keep yer hmda up," said the ruflian, aa one of my tired arms came down an inch.
I obeyed him with lightning-like rapidity, and assured him that I was unarmed, and aft» a stern look at mo lio allowed me to lower iny arms.-
Alter some conversation, he continued—"Now, then, sir, we'll go and see tho 'yarramen.' 1 like the 'pints' of that blue roan of yours heV a good un, or 1 mistake. Will you go first, it sir? I always likes to follow in the footsteps of a gent leinan." llo accompanied this witlcism with a grim chuckle and click of the revolver hammer. Put tbe bridle on the blue roan, and lot the other one go." I did so, reioiciug that he was not going to take Doth my horses. Hetheu vaulted, revolver In hand, on to Bluev's bare back, an indignity which tbe old horse resented with a snort, and a heaveof the hind quarters but finding that be was
Ix'iCring a consummate rider, be went juleliy enough. I had to walk along the brldio-traek in front, and when we got to the station be Jumped off, coolly took my saddle, and was on tbe horse's back again In ,a trice. Ho then made mo walk up to 'the stock-yard, where they were making preparations tor killing a bullock for the Mtatloii. Jones id a 1 tie in his hand, but it was not loaded.
Poor Newdiome, being totally un* used to this sort of treatment, had tried .^lorun, but was sternly ordered back, ,*nd soon seated with the rest of us on
1
"the fence. There we were—five men to one but ^tbat oue armed.
Tho bush ringer now dismounted, picked up Jones' rifle, and demanded 'the powder-fl isk and bullets belonging to It. On these articles being produced, he coolly loaded. He then, seeing that
Newchotue was tbe tuost frightened, »etit hlui to tbe bouse tor fooa, telling him to uiuie back without fire-arms, or die would pick blui off with tbe rifle.
After a short abseuce Newcbouie tratue •bark with some bread and meat, and •half a bottle of brandy. BUek 8uo ,ate voraciously.
We were all by this time boiling over with rage at tbe cool audacity of the soundrel, and yet we dared not move •or lower our hands, aa be had promised a shot at the first who did so. It was now within an boar of sunset, and at this moment a quick start from Jonee made ute look up. and there, down the road, I saw a cloud of dust—horses galloping, aud cowing nearer every moment.
Black S«m saw it, too. "A pltHiI*' nared he, leaping on Bluey's aud dashing awav over tbe creek, dropping his rifle In hie haste. Down we all Jumped, and Jones, laeiBing tbe rifle, snapped It at the bushranger.
Just at this moment Bluey, strange to say, put his foot in a bole, and fell, rl fng tbe btish-ranger Hr from him. sjual tben a police sergeint and black trooper gallopod up, tbeir boms covered with fnaiu end dost, "There be gim!" we shouted.
We tore down to the hut, seised atty iwespuus we could get, and tboee whs got any sort ot fire-arm loaded as they 'went. Tbe sergeant and tbe trooper, of coarse, were at tbe base of tbe range bsbre oa, being on borsebaek but %bev had to dlstnount, sa it wse impoeMbie to ride np tbe steep, craggy sides. Up we all went, the blaek trooper

we all got under eover, and were a little more cautions. The boah-ran bad fired, but luckily mlaeedi At this* moment a heavy thunder-etorttt, long threatening, broke In all ita fnry. Flaan succeeded flash, and the thnnaer roared down oatne tbe rain, first with big pattering drops, then with a steady rush everything was drenched in no time. In ten minutes it was quite dark, and wken the storm ceased it was night in reality.
Every moment I expected to see Black Sam close to me, and when daybreak came next morning I was not sorry. We.tracked him among tbe hills with certainty, for the foot-marks were easily seen after the rain. We saw him at last, and be fired again witbont effect. At last. I saw Jacky, tbe black trooper, who was going cautiously in front along a ridge on the top of them un tain, stop, and point to the rock below him. Tbe sergeant was there in a moment and, thrusting tbe muzzle ot bis revolver through a crevice in the rock beneath m, shouted: "Black S iin I have you covered if you move, I'll aboot you like a dog.*'
We all rushed up, and there, in a sort of cave made by an overhanging rock, lay Black S mi, with bis clotbes all in rags, from tbe desperate way in which be bad dashed through the scrub. We had him pinioned, and submissive, after one savage exclamation. Next dav be was on tbe road to tbe nearest police court, to await his trial.

We claim to sell goods lower than any Retail House in our line of business in the city.
A few Substantial Reasons why we can do so.
1st. We pay nor -nt and in thi* way save what costs other grocery houses from two ta six per cent, on every dollars worth of goods they sell. 2d We buy our good* from manufacturers and first hands, and in this way make a saving in our average of at lea»4 four per cent. 3d. Our sales are at least double, if not treble those of any other retat grocery In towa, and as thin greater amount of bustneKS can be done at only a Utile more expense, it follows that we can on this account reduce our profits at least five per ci-nt. 4th. Being ambitious to build up a still larger business we are sutiafled with a muoh smaller profit thau tnany of our competitors. 1'
TO RECAPITULATE.
NsT^ in Rent, nay 4 per cent. Hwl Clone buying of First Hand**, 4 per cent. By the Large Hnninenn we do. 5 per rent, v" By onr Small Profit Bynteui. 3 per cent. Total »a?edTown t'nstomern, 16 percent. ,,, Here then is the explanation of how it Is that we can yet make money notwithstanding our competitors say we Mil at coat. Our sales are double those of any other house ta our line of business In the city, aad we are ready to test the matter by a comparison af sales.'
