A VKUY proper little dialogue between John and James, in the style of McGufTey, has been circulated around town. J. and J. discuss fully the Terre-IIauto BuildiHg and Loan Association. THK Ladles Aid Society of this eity has relieved over 400 families, and has expended inoro than £5,000 in charity during the past year. This sum is more than has been appropriated by tho county for tho relief of the poor. Tho active inombors of tho Ladies Aid Society are workers of unostentatious good, angels of mercy and kindness. Their foot-falls are heard in tho lowest and most unattractive parts of tho city, where want and suffering exist, nnd many wretched eroatures thank G»d nightly that his ministering angels are abroad. 1 i-' «&»> I _.
THK lecture of Mrs. Mary A. Livermore at tho Opera House on Thursday evening, drew tho largest audience that hns« greeted an entertainment of that kind hero for many years. The expectation was of the highest, and it was entirely satisfied. Mrs. Livermore is essentially a great orator—groat in grasp of subject, great in logic, groat In goodness of thought nnd impulse. Of all the lecturers, this lady is now tho first favorite of Terre-llaute. She will always bo greeted by largo nudionooa here. She will preach at the 1'niversallst church to-morrow morning and at the Opera House in tho evening. Seats at both places free.
THK managers of the Southwestern Railroad will probably ask a subscription of stock from Honey Creek township, through which tho line of tbe|road will run several miles. The cititens of that township will be benefitted greatly by this railroad, and it Is only just that they should boar a portion of its cost. It is probable that a station can be provided by President Tueli at or near the crossing of Honey Creek. We doubt not that the voters of that township will be aa generous as their neighbors of Prairieton and Prairie Creek, who have ordered large subscriptions.

EDITOR MAIL:—In your last week's paper you mention the fact that we havo no public library in our city—no place where those not able to purchase can procure books to road. This should not bo so, and I believe proper effort will remove the ugly fact, and give us' a creditable Library. The last attempt in this direction would have succeeded but for a faulty orgsmlitaUon. The membershipoamounted toquiteenough to maintain a library nnd add to It, but "Jus there was no library to start with, -and the membership subscriptions ^Insufficient to procure one, tho attempt ^failed. With a nucleas of five thou|sand dollars and a proper organisation have no doubt library could be successfully started nnd maintained, and

YESTERDAY was a nice slick day. Everything passed off smoothly. Quite often venerable gentlemen were seen sitting down placidly upon the tops of their heads on the iev side walk, and it wfta good day for cheerful unimp:issioned profanity. Men failed usually to express themselves completely without using tho choice blasphemous vernacular of Horace Greeley. The remarkable thing about this incident of foiling Is Its suddenness. Quick as a flash don't express tho celerity of tho motion. Little boys liko sleet. We are not a little boy.
ON hist Saturday Joseph Abbott took out a writ of replevin from Justico Denehie for a steer which he found in the possession of Froderick Koch, on© of our eity butchors. On the trial of the issue, Mr. Abbott clearly identified the steer as his own and the same was awarded to him. The snmo day Mr. Abbott became convinced that he was mistaken, that tho steer never belonged to him, And he ordered tbo judgment set aside and paid the costs. It is due to Mr. Koch to say that ho bad purchased aaid steer, with three others which ho had killed, from J. J. Belt, who had IK1fore bought them from Nelson Markle who bad raised the steers. Mr. Abbott claimed that he had lost four steers answering to the description given him by Mr. Koch. Mr. K. was so firmly convinced that the steers he had killed had belonged to Mr. Abbott that he actually gave his note to Mr. A. for the payment of their value, and in his turn -instituted suit against Mr. Belt to recover back what he had paid him for the steers^ the sum amounting to 81«K Of course Mr. Abbott gave back the note to Mr. Koch, quashed his action against Mr. Belt, and is now pursuing his investigations in other directions for his lost steers.

-The evidences of the rapidly increasing trade and prosperity of TerreHaute are apparent to every one who is at all observant of passing events. This increase in trade extends to all branches of business, and one can discover springing up on all Bides, new whole sxle establishments in the various mercantile departments. In the whole trade, our city can now successfully compete with th» principal cities of the West, in the line of dry goods, groceries, glass and queensware, hardware, tobacco and cigars, liquors, boots and shoes, carpets, stoves and tinware, drugs and chemicals, saddlery hardware, house furnishing goods, leather, and shoe findings, clothing, et cetera. The stocks kept by our dealers in these several lines are very large and well assorted, and offer to retail dealers very attractive inducements to purchase.
The largest, finest and most complete wholesale assortment of notions that ever weighed down the shelves and counters of a Terre-Haute merchant, has just been stored away in the mam inotb establishment of U. R. Jeffers & Co., 140 Main street. Mr. Jeffers himself secured the goods in New York a few days ago at ten or fifteen per cent, less than they could be bought now. He took time by the forelock and is consequently able to furnish better bargains than those who have delayed longer. This firm is never out done either in price or style nothing "late' ever comes to the surface which they do not secure promptly. Consequently, every retail dealer can get exactly what he wants here quicker than by ordering from the East. He will also have the pleasure of knowing that he has done something for home enterprise. We think we cannot be far out of the way iu saying that there are few if any articles in the notion line, even in New York city that can not be furnished at U. R. Jeffers & Co's, and at prices to correspond with those of the satre articles in the great metropolis. The trade of this firm is now exceedingly large and still rapidly increasing and it well merits to be called one of the leading notion rooms of the West. Merchants in this and surrounding towns and cities cannot make a better strike than to purchase their stock of Jeffers & Co.
Messrs. Elisha Havens and Robert Geddes are the Co. of the establishment. The senior member has been in the trade in this city for twenty years, during which time he has built up a trade that is astonishing in its vastness, reaching not only through Indiana and Illinois, but to Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. ut
