TUB days are now lengthening at the rate ot about seventy-five seoonds a day. Until the Summer solstice is roached, tho fclst or Jhne, when the days beoomo shorter, this will be the ratio of increase. The sun from now Ion to use tho common phraso, returns northward to drive back the Winter.

TUN ball of the Brotherhood of Local Engineers at Dowling Hall, Thursday evening, February 1st, will be a grand affWlr. The "boy»M proposo to make this the big ball of the season. We have befbro alluded to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers as possessing features distinguishing it favorably from many other labor organisations. One of Its leading alms Is to elevate the standard of the profession in lift to which its members belong, and to make sobriety and intelligence Indispensable requisite*. 80 ft»r as we can ascertain the organisation works In perfect aooord with the mauagement of the leading railways of the country, both sides recognising that on!y in a common understanding can the permanent good of either be obtained. The organisation now extends over several Statos, and the buslnes or its members Is such that state lines are practically ignored. One feature of the organisation Is its care for the Sick and disabled members. And provision for widows and orphans of the deceased. A large and steadily accumulating fund Is in the hands of the local organisations, and it Is sought by an set of incorporation
from
Congress to consol
idate the local funds and place the whole in the hands JT officers directly responsible to the entire body under the laws of tks United States, instead of owing« complex responsibility under different State law*.

SHAKSPKARE."—
This Is,not a privilege often enjoyed by the people of a town lUre this. It Is but seldom thst the best histrionic srt, in Its wanderings, can be induct to leave the larger citios and make Its bow to the citisens of our smaller towns. This is, however, sn exceptional case, and Mrs. Macready comes to Terre-Hauie. as she has to other like cities, for lh purpose of initiating the drama con*-^ crated by the genius of the immorn«l bard of Avon. She appears at Dowling Hall on Monday evening next, for one night only, supported by a first-class company of artists, specially selected for the presentation of the highest type of the dramatio art. She has selected Shakspeare's great play o* Shylock for her first and only appearance, that lady sustaining the part of Shylock.
Mrs. Macready is an American lady of high culture, though for some years residing abroad, where she appeared in the leading theatres of the British metropolis, and in Edinburgh, Dublin, Ac. The London Times, on her first appearance at the "Standard" theatre, thus speaks of her success:
From the admirable manner In which Mrs. Macready has acquittod herself and from the histrionic talent she has thrown Into all of ber previous impersonations, the house was in a manner prepared for the successful appearance of the lady. And when Shylock snoke Mrs Maoready was still unobservable, mnch to the surprise of the house, who testified their appreciation by
loud applause. Throughout each scene in ill shi app character than is generally portrayed. At
which ahe appeared it was observable that the lady had a finer appreciation of the
the close of the piece Mrs. Macready was called before the curtain, amid ontburstsof applause."
This is high praise from the great newspaper of the world. The same is echoed by the Liverpool Mercury, the Birmingham Gazette, the Dublin Times and the Edinburgh Statesman. Here at home—in Boston, New York and Philadelphia—the papers are equally emphatic in her praise. The New York Times, Herald, The Post, Tribune, and World the Boston Bee, Post and Advertiser, and the Priladelphia Ledger and Press pronounce Mrs. Macready unequalled in this great character.
Tickets and reserved seats for sale at B. G. Cox's bookstore. WE give below a couple of extracts from Kansas journals concerning Mrs. Mary A. Livertnore, who will lecture in the Opera House Thursday evening, February 15th.

Mrs. Livermore spolte for two "hours without apparent fatigue, without notes, and held her audience spellbound to the end. During the entire two hours she did not once forget the dignity of her cause, and steered clear of the stereotyped abuse of the •tyrant man.' We do not mean by this, however, that Mrs. Llvermore's lecture was destitute of huinor. She was often witty, but never unreasonable, coarse or slangy.
Still another adds: "The address was frequently lighted up with bursts of Impassioned eloquence, and the many apt Illustrations enforced her arguments with all the power of logic. It was listened to with rnpl attention, and Mrs. Livermore may feci assured thut the seed sown in the minds of her hearers in this city will not be without fruit."
