DISCOVERY OF COFFEE. Towards the middle of the fifteenth century, a poor Arab was traveling In Abyssinia, and finding himself weak ana weary from fatigue, he stopped near a grove. Being in want of fuel to cook his rice, be cut down a tree which happened to be covered with dried berries. Ills meal bein^cooked and eaten, the traveler discoverod that the half burned berrie.4 were fragrant. He collected a number of these, and on crushing them with a stone, he found that their aroma increased to agreat extent. While wondering at this,he accidentally let fail the substance Into a can which contained his scauty supply of water. Lo, what a miracle the almost nutrid liquid was instantly purified, he brought it to his Hps it was fresh and agreeable, and in a moment alter the traveler na,J ao far recovered hia strength aud energy as to be able to resumo bis Journey. The lucky Arab gathered as many berries aa he could, and arriving at Aden, in Arabia, be informed the Mufti of his discovery. The worthy divine wan an inveterate odium smoker, and had been Buffering for years from the Influence of the poisonous drug. Ho tried an infusion of the roaatedTberries, and was ao delighted at the recovory of his former vigor, that in gratituae to the tree he called it Canuah, which in Arabic signifies force. And this is 'he manner in which coffee waa first discovered.
Tol*»lfVKNT PlTTINO IN S.MALH-'L»OX. I)r. 1. H. Bird (according to the Medical and Surgical Reporter), uses an ointment mado of charcoal and lard to prevent pitting in sinall-pox. This is applied freely over the surface of the faco, neck, and handa, as soon aa tho disease is distinguished, and continued until all symptoms of suppurative fever have ceaaod. The application allays tho itching, and seems to shorten the duration of the disease, and loaves the patient without a blemish, the eruption protected by the ointment not even showing ainga o? nustul ttion the charcoal preventing tne action of light, and lard that of air.

FURS.
Having determined to establish a fur depart men in connection with our dry good6 we respectfully explain the scheme.
As a first-rate stock of furs requires aa investment of several thousand dollars it has been customarv for the dry goods, hat and certain notion nouses of our city to handle these goods In a "small way." This has divided the trade to &o jireat an extent that no one has bad a really well assorted stock and neither merchant nor consumer has reaped any material advantage.
Last year we were disponed to give up the trade but as no oue Seemed disposed to make it an attractive specialty we have determined to do so.
This year we will offer these goods In far greater variety than they have ever been displayed In Terre-Haute.
We anticipate that some who really do not care to engage in the trade will attempt to close out the "stock on hand" at cost, and we understand that to make our undertaklnga success we must keep below their prices.
