Towards the middle of Hie fifteenth century, a poor Arab was traveling In Abyssinia, and finding himself weak and weary from fatigue, he stopped near a grove. Being in want of fu'1! to cook his rice, be cut down a tree which happened to bo covered with dried berries. IIin meal beiniccooked and eaten, the traveler discoverod that the half burned berried wero fragrant. He collected a number of these, and on crushMAXTEIJi, ing them with a stone, he found that their aroma increased to agreat extent. While wonderingattbis.be accidentally let fall the substance into a can which contained his scanty supply of water. Lo, what a miracle I the almost nutrid liquid was instantly purified, be brought it to his lips It was fresh and agreeablo. and in a moment alter the traveler haj so far recovered his strength aud energy as to be able to resumo bis journey. The lucky Arab gathered as many oerries as he could, and arriving at Aden, in Arabia, he informed the Mufti of his discovery. The worthy divine was an invoterate odium smoker, and had been suffering for years from tho Intluonce of the poisonous drug. He tried an Infusion of the roaated berriee, and wus so delighted at tho recovery of his former vigor, that in gratitude to the tree he calledit Canuah, which In Arabic signifies force. And this is 'he manner in which coffee was first discoverod.

FURS,
FURS.
Having determined to establish a fur department in connection with our dry good6 we respectfully explain the scheme.
As a first-rate utock of furs requires an investment of several thousand dollars it has been customary for the dry goods, hat and certain notion nouses of our city to handle these goods in a "small way." Thlsliasdlvlded the trade to so/^reat an extent that no one has had a really well assorted stock aud neither merchant nor consumer has reaped any material alvantage.
Last year we were disposed to give up the trade but as noone seemed disposed to make it an attractive specialty we have determined to do so.
This year we will offer these goods In far greater variety than they have ever been displayed in Terre-IIaute.
We anticipate that some who really do not care to engage In the trade will attempt to close out the "stock on hand" at cost, anil we understand that to make our undertaking a success we must keep below their prices.
