A "SETTING" HEN.

That ben lately took a notion to set. We opposed the enterprise, bat still »he kept on setting. We expostulated with her we argued the question we demonstrated the disadvantages attendant uppn incubating at this inclement season of the year. We proved that to knit stockings for infant chickens has already been considered a tedious job, but still she set and sat and itoL Finding moral suasion useless with that strong minded old hen, we tried force, we heaved rocks at her, and the moment a rock would come near her, she would book her bill behind it and roll it under and chuck in a manner most contented and exasperating. Then we piled lumps of coal in her nest. She climbed on top of the coal spread herself out and looked like a speckled umbrella over a deaayed bay stack, and still she set, sat, sot and sotted. We next resorted to stratagem. We removed the coal, made a nice cosy uest, and placed therein a hr.t full of nice round chunks of Ice. We called her in our blandest manner, explained to her that we were sorry for having been so rude to ber, and that she might sot as long as she wanted to that is, us long as she could tind it agreable. She clucked her thanks and proceeded to extend herself all over ice. We watched her closely. Pretty soon she stood up and drew up one loot to warm it then fh put down that and drew up the other then she looked down to see

It

she could discover the cause

ot the extraordinary low degree of temperature prevailing in the nest then she sat down. In a few moments she resumed ber former manoeuvers, and then she Hew up on the roost and cackled, pretending that she had laid an egg. It is needless to add that the hen hua abandoned the idea of setting any more this winter.—[Ottawa (111.) Free Trader.

The tachytypograph, or rapid tyjpewriter, is an invention which is being patented by Mr. J. S. Davis, of Haverforfltvest,^ oepf»lsis of a machine for* obtaining verbatim reports of speeches, debates, sermons, Ac., lO tJ}P ordinary Knglish characters. It will Ih* generally applicable to all purposes where rapid writing or printing is desired, and is intended particularly to supersede short-hand for reporting purposes it is manipulated by means of an ordinary key-board, and can be mado of a convenient size lor portability and uso in public assemblies. One alphabet of type is used, one type or character is affixed in a sock«t at one end of each twenty-six levers. These "type-levers" are actuated by a series of "key-levers." When any "key" is depressed, the corresponding type-lev-ers brings down aud imprints its tjrpe or character on a roll ot paper which passes directly over the ''printingpoint," and thus legible impression is produced on the paper, either by an endless band of carbonised or transfer passing round both wheels outside the paper over It at the "printing-point," or a strip of silk stretched clirecrfy above the "printing-point," at a distance of a quarter-inch above tho paper, and suspended on two rollers saturated with suitable ink, and rocelvlng motion from the paper-carrylug apparatus.—[Machanics* Magazine.
