A PIG IN A POKR.
How the. Dutchman Swapped IH* Calf— The D'tsh/ul Pig—A Very Good Piece of Dialect.
Hans was in a terrible sweat. One of hia fine-it calves had broken its leg, and he knew not what to do with it. At this juncture Pat happened along, and offered Hans for hia crippled calf a pig, which in his oily brogue he described a* "an illigant craythur, sir." After some hesitation, Hans agreed to accept the pig as an equivalent for the ealf, taking Pat's word for the many good qualities and fine manners of the pig, all of which combined rendered hitn a "jewel, aur."
A few days passed, and Pat had killed ind eaten or otherwise disposed of his calf, when Hans thought he would go irid look after his pig. Accordingly be hied hitn to the domicile of Patrick, lie found the gentleman at bis home in ihe suburbs, mending a wheelbarrow. Hans made known the object of bin visit, when Pat said
All right, sur: you'll find hitn In good health ana line spirits, sur." "This way, sur," and Pat led the way through some beds ol cabbage to a corner of the lot surrounding his unpretending "cot," where, in a muchpatchud board pen, stood Han's poreine property. The beast arose as the two men rested their arms upon the top of the pen and looked down upon nitn. As he elevated bituself upon his long, slender limbs, he gave a loud snort, and shukUig his head till his long, pendulous ears flapped against his cheeks like leathern apron.-*, he elevated Ids nose and backing toward, the roar of his pen began smacking his chops, at the same time uttering a low, dissatisfied and distrust'ul muttering sound. Where not hairless ho waa sandy was of the masculine persuasion id white eye-lashes, and a good deal of white surrounding his little, glittering eye—indeed, lie had not at .ill a prepossessing look. "lie's a bit bashful, sur," said Pat, in explanation of tho somewhat dubious conduct of the dissipated-looking beast, and naturally anxious to remove any unfavorable impression said demeanor might have created in Hans' mind. "He's a bit bashful, sur, not hiving seen many jintlemin out o' me own fatuily but.he's sure, sur, to be very loud o' ye whin ye 'vo bin a little while in his society, si.r."

A DEAD BELLE.
Death of the Beautiful Mrs. Lorxllard— Her Life Story.
A lady writer in the Cincinnati Chronicle says: Some years ago when visititg Boiton I heard much of Miss Fannie Carter, who was called the Belle of the Hob, albeit a little showy and fast for thalflatitade. Her portriat waa on hibitfon, and most of the younger porit of the community went to see it. was certainly a very beautiful wo- :•, and waa reported to be assprightus beautiful, and to sing divinely. Subsequently she married Mr. Lorillard, son or nephew of the rich tobacconist of New York, and went with him to Flu rope. Next we hear of her at the Tuiieriea, completing by her voice the conouest of the Emperor, which she baa already made by her beauty. Then it flashed over the world, and society in Europe and America waa startled by the announcement, that the beautiful American had done what none but an American womau would have dared to do. Seeking to rival Eogenie and the Princess Metternich, she had appeared at a oourt ball, her head surrounded by a halo of light proceeding from tiny jets of gas the reservoir was hidden under the masses of hair which she wore. Mr. Lorillard died, and his widow married a Mr. Ronalds. It was not a happy union, and they separated. She lived much abroad, In Germany, and for a time in Tunis, where she went lor her health. She held quite a little court there, being a friend and favorite of the Bey of Tunis. Happening in an artist's studio one day in New York, I Was attracted by the criticism of a lady, who stood w'ith her back to ine, on a picture we id goue there to see. She pointed out its beauties, found fault with the coloring and the light in which it was placed, and it was all done with such an apparent knowledge, and in so assured a manner, that I asked who the lady was. She is Mrs. Ronalds, and the picture was a portriat of herself. Now she is dead, aftei a short, brilliant, and checkered career. She died receutly ol consumption at tho Isle of Wight.

A few weeks since, a clerk in one of the Departments, accompanied bv a friend, entered a restaurant in this city for the purpose of ordering "a few on the half-shell." The two young gentlemen referred to had been'in the saloon but a few minutes when a well-dressed and respectable appearing colored man entered, and, sitting down at one of the tables, in a quiet manner gave his order for refeshmenfs, which were soon forthcoming. Hereupon the clerk above referred to, who had watched the proceedings with rising indignation, re marked to his companion, loud enough to be heard by every person in the room: "If I had tnonevenough tobuv the Court, I'd take a chair and break that nigger's head J" The colored man continued his meal in silence, and, after finishing, made inquiries as to the identity of the belligerent young gentleman who had mnde the "above quoted remark. Ascertaining that he was a Government clerk, ho laid the matter before tho head of the Department where the "nigger" hater was employed, who at once summoned the young man und questioned him as to the truth of the charge whieh hud been made against him, Clericus "acknowledged the corn," both as to the offensive remark and the unuvuul quantity ofbad whisky he had been drinking when he made it. His excuse was doeni' itisuHicietit, and lie was at once dismissed. The colored man referred to was the Hon. K. H. Elliott, onti ot the colored members of Congress from South Carolina.
