GOOD STORY WELL TOLD. IThe following story is told by Rev. J. Hyatt Huiilb: 4
Wo stopped al Syracuse, N. Y.f for
dinner. You remember the railroad depot, cmitr.illy situated, wi'h its eastern and western entrances exactly alike—as much so as the two ends of a oar.
After we had dined, the depot-master informed uie that we had seventeen minutes to spare before tbe departure of the eastern train. This, thought I, will give me an opportunity to see the ally, and a glorious chance
for
a smoke,
provided a clergy niau could be tempted into such a wasteful and worldly amusement.
I s.iuiiu*red forth, and utter an absence of exactly thirteen minutes, having enjoyed a delightful and soothing •troll, I was leisurely returning, watch In hand, when to my sudden astonishment, I Itoheld tlio train slowly gliding out of the other end of the depot, and Increasing its sp«ed at every puff of the gigantic locomotive.
UnrH imined was a "call" which admitted neither correspondence nor delay there was no time lor "taking into ttmsideration Ho without conlerrlng with flesh and blood, I put like a sky rocket with a double fu«e.
For in'iinent I thought I had it all nv own way I thought 1 was gaining ground, although I knew 1 wa* losing wind. 1 was enoouraged in the race by sundry helpful fellows, who kept crying Tut as I tssed ••(Jolt gaUerHr \t
IMucky boy I He ain't left, oh, no I" And well meaning and benignant exhortations.
Though they Intended, perhaps, to "help ine over inv course, I found that the more they shouted the less I wat Inclined to ruu, and the more decidedly did thu locomotive make its tumble headway against me.
To give up the chase to submit to tho chigrluof being left to lose my party and my passige meet with disappointment and not to meet with friends, all this was bad enough but the thought of encountering, all the way back to the depot, that line of interested individuals, who, with their abeeriug exclamations, had so feelingly encouraged me on tuy outward journey, this was tbe bltterost pill in thin unexpected dose.
Hut It must be done so tapering off gradually, 1 gave up the contest and turned tck to meet tuy fate, and—If I dould dud him—the depot-master whose blundering statements were the on use of all iny troublo.
Without search, that individual advanced to groet mo with the bland recognition of a fact that no one oould well deny:
Well, you got left, did youf" 't I replied only with the resentment of "silencing eye." If I looked as 1 tried to took, my photograph, taken at that instant, would hardly be chosen to graco an album gallery of "ouiiuent divines."'
Several by-slanders, seeking information, asked with a show of confidential interest In my eaae, in what wise the thing had happened and others, wishing to point a moral, advised tne to be on hand a little earlier next time.
With returning breath, relief and words oame together, ana I squnrely charged the railroad official with all the blame. 1 spoke of his Incompetency in no measurable terms, recalling how after I liad placed my natty In the oar, he had assured ine that there were full seventeen minutes to spare before the train went out "while here," said 1, with a triumphant exhibition of my ^r.itch, "the seventeen minutes art even now birely up, and yet the train is gone out of sight."
After no little l»ot shot oast back and fbrth, with the usual variations and final perorations of "you did," and "you didn't," "you're another," etc., I asked him whether 1 would be risking another chance of being left, if I de-
Eour
ended on hlra to give me tbe exact of the departure ol the next Kastorn train.
I&tsUwn I" exclaimed he. YM, KtaMrul" I replied, with a de* olded upward and sarcastic inflection.
Why," quoth he. "tbe train you've just been chxslng with suclt good luck wasn't the Kastcrn train but tbe Western express."
With much Interesting confusion and excitement I stammered nut: Then where In Joppa I* tbe Rasters train
Why, there* it is," replied he, "Just gettlug under way at the other end of the depot, L^g it, or you'll- loaa th*t,"
IT ever I made rapid time nia^e it then, passed rl*ht through the depot like the wind. I t«lt aa if I was all legs. One glance, however, at the rear door of the last oar aa I was nearing it oame near being tco modi fbr «*«. I discovered tbe group of ray long lost friends, whom forum and (kcea seemed bursting with poorly suppressed and tU ttunxl mirth.
As 1 reached safety tbe pUtfttrta. the fire that opened upon me could only I* equalled for it* mareHeas aflteot by tbe Ar* in the roar, hM» which 1 had prvvldenilv fled.
I heard Jibe*, and jokes, and leers. I beard the boars* laugtiter of Ail! cheated men. and the hystarisal efforts of mirth-exhausted women.
They had all witneeaed my «fc*aa after the wrong train now fearftti l*st 1 should overtake It, 'Attd then rrjoicing at my evident Uck of what jockey* e*il aa my speed began is slacken and my «h*ooee with tbe loo«»«mUve began to grow "small by deft"** and beautifully less."* They id wu•ewed the "blowing up" administered by Uie dopat mam*w,
contest of legs versus locomotive. They had witnessed my Anal triumph, bat how gratefully I waa welcomed, and with what feelings I received their peculiar congratulations, I leave my readers to Imagine/
HOW SIMPSON WAS CURED. Mr. Alexander Simpson, of Towanda, is dead. He was bilious, Mr. Alexander Simpson was, and he saw tbe following paragraph from the pen of Dr. Hall:
If a bilious man wants to get well, and is in no special burry, all that he has to do is to lie down out-of doors between two broad boards, and stay there until be gets ravenously hungry."
Mr. Simpson followed this advice, and calmly fell alseep with a broad board on top of him. Under ordinary circumstances there would have been no trouble but there was a Fat Men's Ball in tbe lager beer saloon next door that day, and the two champion fkt men got over tbe fence, and sat down with a ferk on top of Mr. Alexander Simpson's upper board without knowing be was tbere. It squelched the breath out of bim at tbe first blow. And the fat men, you understand, tbey sat and sat tbere, and discussed politics, and tbe Alabama claims, and tbe Legal Tender Act, and the weather, and woman's rights, and tbe Harrison boiler, and metaphysics, and they kept on drinking glass after glass of beer, and getting heavier and heavier, until one of them happened to look under tbe board—and tbere was Alexander Simpson," as dead as Nebuchadnexzar, and mashed out so tbin that you could pass bim in under a closed door without scraping his vest-buttons! He does not sulfer from bile now. But does anybody know wbere Dr. Hall lives Because Mrs. Simpson is makiug inquiries, and she is anxious to snatch a tew silver hairs from bis brow, and to necessitate tbe purchase ox a patent glass eye.
Dualin, the newly invented explosive, is a terribly destructive agent. It looks like a mixture of sawdu.st and lard, and has a sickly odor. It does not explode by concussion, nor ignite by fire nor does water affect its explosive properties. But a couple of pounds of tbe innocent looking stuff laid on a lime-rock and covered with earth, and then touched with a current of electricity, completely pulverised tl.e stone, leaving nothing nut the enormous hole which "served an its bed. Of course tbe inventor predicts great things of an agent so potent anTwonderful, and we hope the ball of his anticipations will be realized for his sake, and for the luxury of looking on rockless hay fields and drinking water that comes from the deep places. Our only regret is that tbe explosive is not capable ol

olitical application. Just think of such a compound to apply to a corrupt Ring? Whit a nice thing to be able to lay a tew pounds of it upon a rotten ptrtyand turning on a stream of lightning? The thought makes us impatient.— Goldenj\ge.
"That
Little Difficulty."—Edwin
Booth was traveling on the cars. The passengers, hearing he was aboard, naturally evinced a^urlosity to see tho great actor. Among tbe passengers wag a genuine Verinonter, who occupied a seal some four or five benches in the rear of the great object. By slipping from one seat to another he soon occupied the one immediately "aft" of Booth. His anxiety was great. Reaching over and touching Eawln on tbe shoulder, he t»ald: "Ah! eh! excuse me,sir, bat is your name Beutb T"
In his well modulated v^ice Booth replied: "Yes, sir, my nam# is Boo h." "Ah! eh excuse me, sir but is your name Edwin Booth?" "Yes. sir, my name is Edivin Booth." "Really, eh,*ha! sir bti you must really excuse me, sir: butlia eh sir, are you a brother to tbe gentleman who had the little difficulty w|h Mr. Lincoln at tho theatre
It Is stated that the yMing cadet at West Point who was tbe iibject of hazing which oausod the exjulsion of two cadets, was one Devlnojappointed by Representative Orr, of fowa. Devlne would not base worth a ^nt, and resisted all attempts to humuatebim.
