contends

that neither Huxley, Tyndsil, Darwin, nor Spencer are making headway against revealed religion a fact, il ft is a fact, which should bo known so as to quiet the fears and silence the aspersions of Evangelical preachers and essayists. Exactly what our reviewer means by "revealed religion" however, is not quite clear. If he means the religion revealed in human nature and history, the religion of conscience and reason, the religion which draws its sustenance and inspiration from the beneficence and perfection of the uni verse which is a shining and sublime revelation oi the mind and love of its Creator, then the facts will doubtless sustain his position. But if his "revealed religion" is some official scheme of salvation, some make-shifts to snatch souls out of a ruined world into a heaven for which they are unfit and do not deserve, something resting on the say-so of somebody who lived no one knows exactlv when, we are strongly inclined to think that the fafcts tell the other way. The vast amount of indifference to Orthodox religion in the community may not be altogether owing to the teachings of science but its indirect influence is immense, and thousands who know nothing of its teachings are constantly affected by it in thought and feeling. No one can listen to our leading Orthodox preachers without perceiving at a glance how their views have been modified by the discoveries of science and the speculations of savants. The article in question shows the insidious and powerful influence which the very men it names have had upon its author's mind. True, the old churches aro not closed and their congregations dispersed but to argue that science makes no headway against the old religion from this fact, is like contending that summer makes no headway against winter because there is ice in May and the mountains wear their snowy caps in June.—Golden Age.
