A GREETING.

BY MRS. E. SHERMAN SMITH.

Hail to thee, beautiful river! Still dost thou sparkle and flow, And laugh hack the sunshine of summer

Ax thou didst in the fair "Lona-aao.'p In this world of Humanity round tn«e„ 80 many sad changes I nee. I count it a boon and a blearing

To discover no change* in tb»-e.

With tear* that are token* of srlsdness, With smiles lying deeper than Joy. With a childlike delight in thine aspect

That year* cannot change or dentroy, I come to thee, after long absence, I come, when the winter 1* o'er, To dream a nweet dream of the rammer

As of old, on thy inuse-hatintod shore.

Oh! here.in the morn of existence. Such wonderful fancies were mine That I beard In thy murmuring waters

Soft whlnper* from being* divine And my thought*, to that fairy-like musle, Danced onward a* Joyous and free A* thy waves In the full tide of spring-time

Dance on to the 11 militant sea.

It seemed that no storm-cloud* could darken Life'* current, then rippling along In the aunxhlne of Innocent gladness

To the cadence of Hope's happy song. Youth's world of enchantment was round mr\

A world full of beauty and love, v.. And my soul mirrored all the bright prospect

As thy Dreast mIrrors heaven above I have learned mince those days of delusion That Joy hath iu ebb and It* flow That lire, like these swlft-glidlng waters,

Full 01 ten In shadow inmstgo. I have learneJ. too, that hearts calm and tranquil

May be nursed by wild Pamion's contrel, Till elomls of le*palr for a season lllde Heaven's sweet light from the soul

But I read a new lemon of patience, Oh, waves! In your aspect to-day, Which show not a trace or a token J"*-:

Of wild wintry storms pastted away. And I think, with most grateful emotion, With tears starting lender and warm, That my path, like thine own beauteous river, '•Hath more of the sunshine than storm.

New lialllmure-on-the-1[udton,

1871.

A SLIGHT MIS UNDERSTANDING. It is Mr. Pickoragill Seyker who lives ttn the outskirts of Washington where htf possesses a lino country sent and a now settled and immovable belief in llio innate depravity of human nature. And this is how it' came about. Mrs. Tickorsgill Seyker wanted to go to the springs. It had nothing to do with it nt all that Mrs. P. 8. lived delightfully In one of the coolest and most perfect houses In the Territory of Henry of the Good, and that she was surrounded witli every heat-defying and comfort producing luxury. Mrs. 8. had just received a trilling invoice of twenty-two drosses ordered in I'arlp before the fall. Hut—wo may as well say right here, howovor, to* prevent a very possible mistake suggested by the dresses thornselves, that we mean the fall of Paris, not tho original fig-leaf incident—but what, we repeat, was the use of good Clothes, and comfort and convenience if rendered insipid from a lack of that delightful spice, envy? Yes, Mrs. 8. was sufficiently happy to desire a change, so she inust go to the Whito Sulphur forthwith.

It was altogether useless for Mr. Seyker to point out that business was ball and money scarco? and that tho hanks wouldn't tako orcers on tho Mc(iurrahan claim as collators! any more. Mrs. S.'s heart was sot upon it and that settled it. At ouch fresh refusal she would open ono of her twelvo trunks, lay her mlserablo head on ono of the symmetrical fwenty-two, and sob and ^snh until the exusperated Mr. 8. hoped that the lid would fall shut aad lop her inconsolable head off.

Well, the end of it all was that a notice was put in the papers and up at tho gate announcing that tho beautiful est,tie of "Hack woods" was for sale. If.1 would soil the property—Mr. S. thought with grim satisfaction—lot Mrs. 8. live for-three weeks at tho }re« nbrler on tho proceeds, and then 'board In wretchedness for tho rest of her lile. Thnt would take tho nonsense out of hor if anything could, ho said.

With that chnrmlng disregard of tho "future which distinguishes tho sex on such occasions, Mrs. Soyker was delighted at her victory. It wan Iruothat it might tako some time to elfect the disposal of the premises but then, in the meantime, It was such a delightful •sensation to hoe up the geraniums In

hesled low shoos mid clocked

"slocking*, while tho gentlemen in search of real estate wore looking over the grounds and at her ns though sho «\VKS to bo thrown in with tho garden •fixture*. Hut the gentlemen in search of "a French roof and all the modern conveniences" went not plenty by any menus, ami Mrs. 8. was rapidly making up her mind to go Into tho milks ,for good, when the other day ft stranger •#on a got hie steed reined up at the front gate and contemplated the sign with evident satisfaction.

He was not a very ornate looking in dividual, but then all rich men dress biullv thought Mr. Seyker, as he tied a f'roslt handkerchief over his cheek— ..which was much swollen by *11 Insect 'bite of ft few days before—and proceed to welcome the prospected purchaser. "This is evidently Mr. Seyker," said the stranger "I should like to see the plnce."

dress'

By all means," exclaimed the proprietor "pray let tho boy take your .horseround to the stable.and step up to ""the house a minute, while I get my ilwt."

Tho visitor looked somewhat surprised at this unexpected hospitality, but it was very hot, so he followed Mr. 8. Hip to the porch. Here he sal down until the host appeared with some ic«l iiock, which he said would do to cool oft with before they took a walk over the grounds.

The equestrian took to the hock very klwllv snd admired the front view, including the a fbr«-mentioned clocked Mocking*, very much. Then Mr. 8. took him over the property in away that would have m»d Kilbotirn «t Latta hldo their diminished head*. He! showed the atranirer the "well stocked" orchard, and with immense pUusiblli-. tv explained away tue «ungtil«r fact that onlv one of tho trees to peaches this year. This he noticed !.du disturb" the examiner In the lost, as he Vent on devouring the product* 01 the one fortunate tree with great sstisfactiion. Then they went to see the v«pCable garden, and the stable and the cistern, where the former proprietor

had fallen in and been drowned, fend the unknown said that it waaali yery convenient nnd nice in 'sl. vary. JThen thev oked in at the wood -house, "where a\uiedman had hunft himself ever no long ago, and hia fthoak had 4een doing all the sawing and splitting |for the family ever since. After that Jthey went over the ts sd with a nice %nok on It, and then the other with a mortgw* on It, and *0 on. 1 When they got back to tb !.msedin

jirvwsion.

seedy-looking Croesus had much to say in praise of the wine and Mr. S.'s Havana* after dinner, he lay in the hammock and smoked while the hostess performed sweetly on the harp.

In the course of time the sytnmetri cal steed of the wayfarer was brought round, well groomed and fed, and Mrs. 8. gracefully retired so that the gentlemen could talk business.

Well, sir," said Mr. Seyker. aa in differently as possible, "Well, sir, what do you think of the place?" "Ah I to be sure sir," said the other, taking his foot out of the stirrap again "I had almost forgotten that let me look at it."

I don't exactly understand you,' said the mysterious proprietor. "Why, wer'n't you bitten by a cen tipede the other day

V'

Yes." Exactly so well, my little boy was bitten by something this morning, and as we thought it might be a centirx too, so I concluded to come out and get you to show me the place."

Mr. 8cvker always keeps his shotgun loaded now. He says it he could only have found the box of caps on the above occasion in time, he would have blown that perambulating fraud into a thousand fragments, horse and all. DERRICK DODD.

AND now comes the

faims

Catholic World

to pay its respects to Dr. McCosh. It thinlcs he has done well for a Protestant. But in attacking Positivism, which is the popular name for modern unbelief, he is obliged to take his stand on Catholic ground, or imperil his whole argument. Whenever he quits the position which he holds in common with the Roman Church his ground becomes untenable and his argument un availing. It contends that Protestantism has no logical defense against modern unbelief, and either it must surrender to Rationalism or re-enter the Church. But this assumes that Protestantism is at war with Rationalism, which, we take it, is a mistake. Some Protestants are terrified at Rationalism, which they look upon as irreligion itself but the whole spirit and idea of Protestantism is rationalistic, and when truly developed leads to Rationalism. The religion that is contradictory to reason cannot bo true and every Protestant sect to-day holds its creed in the name of reason, and tries to convince men of its truth by its reasonableuess. Rationalism is not the enthronement of individual reason over tho reason of the race it does not represent every person as a sort of

iitomizcd infallibility it merely that reason is the interpreter of truth, and appeals from the authority of a corporation and the declinations of synods and councils to that which is behind all popes and all creeds and all Scriptures. Rationalists may be very irrational in their methods and fcicorrect in their conclusions, but their principle seems to be the only valid one that Protestants can stand upon.— Golden Age.

Brnn DOHLK.—If by his success we may judge him, Budd Doble, tho driver of (ioldsmlth Maid, is tho very prince and master of pilots of the sw'iftfooted track birds. This is his record: He drove Dexter in his best harness time of 2:17^ Lucy in her best harness time of 2:12Hi and Goldsmith Maid in her best harness timo of 2:17. He rode Dextor in his best saddle time of 2:18, and drove Jesse Wales and Darkness In tho best douhlo team time on record of2:27K. Ho also drove Dexter in his best wagon time of 2:24, which time has been only once equalled by that of Lady Thome, in exactly the same time. He hold tho straps over Goldsmith Maid in a wagon race.whore sho trotted in 2:24^ and pulled up tho mare inside of tho distance stand. The three best consecutive heats 011 record of 2:20£ 2:17 and 2:20Ji by Goldsmith Maid, were driven by him, tho time being 4)4 seconds hotter than any other yot made and, to conclude his brilliant record, he drove the Maid at Minneapolis yesterday in 2:17 'i. Verily, Budd has a most persuasive way about him with the equine family, and when he climbs into a sulky scat he mounts a 4hrone.

THK Cincinnati Commercial has discovered tho following national anomalies: The French have tho best po^drossers and the most hot-headod men of any people in the world. The Americans have the best dentists and tho most bad teeth of any peoplo in the world. Tho Germans have the best l»\ger and tho fewest drunkards of any peoplo in tho world.
