4 DUTCH LOVER.
A vouJiy gentleman in Amsterdam had CeeiJ, yeafr or two ago, paying his addresses, without success, to a young lad v. The father of the maiden was altogether obdurate, and could not be induced to favor the suit but the swain had observed certain symptoms which Jed him to believe that his attentions wero not wholly unacceptable to the lady When the festival of St. Nicholas (December 5th) approached some waggish friends proposed a plan of offering his band and heart, the drollery of which might possibly soften the unwilling father, and aswurj the lady of the entire devotion of his person.
On the eve of St. Nicholas a long and rather narrow box, with somo holes in the lid, was conveyed to tho house of Mynheer ,addressed to Jufvrow.with the swain's compliments, in addition to which, without the latter'# knowledge, the facetiouH friends had painted in large letters, "Een dikke vrijer"—a fat lover. The box arrived at the usual live-o'clock dinner-hour and the daughter, seeing the box in the hall, and, reading the address, wished at onco to open it. But her father, who perhaps smelt a rat, and knew better than his daughter tho possible humors of the day, said "No let us have dinner first, and meanwhile have the box brought into tho dining room."
With some trouble the box was removed there by the maids. Dinner draggod its slow longth along, was artfully protracted, and the opening of theDox kept in abeyance until it was almost time to go to bed.
Then the hammer was missing, the screw drivet could not be found, and at last the opening of the wonderful box put oft until next morning.
Goede-nacht, slaap goed." All departed, save Mynheer the father. "With bed-candle in hand,he went to tho box, listened carefully for a mo mentor two, and then, giving the box a slight kick, proceeded to moralize aloud:
What a fool that little donkey of a follow Is to suppose I will ever let him have iny daughter! I wonder what he has sent her? What can those little holes be for? All! hero is one of my vrouw'a knitting-needles let us poke one in and see if we can make out*''
For God's sake don't!" said a stifled voice from tho box, "or you will poke my eye out."
Bless me who's this? What can it be?" I am Mynheer ," said the •olee. "For hoaven's sako, let me out —I can't stand it much longer." "Will you promise nover to apeak to my daughter again, If I do?" "No, 1 won't—I'll die first."
Very well, thoii good-night." Don't be Inhuman I shall bo dead in another hour."
Will you promise?" "No," said the voice In tho box, more faintly "never!"
Well, you area brave little soul I'll let you out." Sly lather took out screw-driver and hammer from his own pockot, where thoy had been lost and let out tho poor lover's very cramped but plump and oomely person.
Now, I am a freo man'" said the latter, Inn somewhat weak voico (and no wonder), "I glvo my free promise, as vou have saved my life, not to speak to your daughter again without your permission."
Well," rejoined the father kicking the box, "If you have not done for her more than most swoethearts would you havo certainly got into less."
Small wit on the one sido, and diplomatic gratitude on the other, made them so well pleased that they shook hands, and parted such gouvJ friends that soon overcame Mynheer 's repugnance to tho match, and before the next St. Nicholas, won the lady, too.
THE CHINESE LANGUAGE. From the visit of ft reporter to the Chinese School at California State prison, wo learn that the peculiar characteristics of this race crop out in everv direction. Imitation is the ail-prevail-ing power with this faculty they master the English language In a remarkably short space of time. In reading Aloud they seldom become proficient in writing the language they resort to imitation and speedily overcome all obstacles.. Some of the ohlrogruphy of the celestials is equal to lithography iu point of harmouy and delicacy. "The Chinese Language Is a string of monosyllables, and thee* are not numerous, but their meaning Is varied by different pronunciations. Thus the won! tehu, spoken by lengthening the means master when pronouncod rapidly it means kitchen, and when spoken with aloud voico. and depressed toward the end. it signiflee pillar. The language of the provinces varies, and even among native® of the same province. signs aroused to relieve the ambiguity of words. There are not more than 850 sounds that can be distinguished by the English alphabet, and the written language has 80.090 character*, representIngoojectsor ideas. The vocal language being so deficient to the ear, it is common, to prevent mistakes in talking, to make with the finger the sign of the character that one meats to express by the word for 2S different and discordant ideas are, on an average, to be expressed by one sound so similar that the difference cannot lie conveyed by our alphabet. The Chinese characters soetn devised as a communication batweeu those who are deprived of speech the sign is sometimes arbitrary and at others It represents the object "described. Thus a prison is repre-: rnmted by a square, denoting an inclos-1 un\ and the addition within it represents a prisoner. DENTISTRY IN JAPAN. The profession of dentistry sinks to the level of a verv low trade in Japan,
a box covered with brass ornaments, which their occupation is recogni The extraction of a tooth is frequently followed by death by tetanus, probably, so awkwardly is it done. The tooth is extracted by the operator's fingers, but not until it has been well loosened by means of a stick and a mallet vigorously wielded. The operation is seldom performed, but Droedder, a traveller in that country, saw some teeth in possession of one of these charlataus that had large portions of the alveolar process attached. In the face of these facts it can scarcely be credited that artificial teeth sustained by atmospheric pres sure, have been In use from time immemorial. These teeth are carved out of sea-horse ivory, the molars bein tifullv studded with little

THE Sunday question is one of the problems which some people find it ex tremely difficult to solve. Here is Dr. Westcott, a Baptist clergyman, who would rather have the old Connecticut Sabbath, on which a man was fined for kissing his wife, than tho absolute looseness which prevails at the present time. It is exceedingly easy to condemn others for sins we are not inclined to, and perhaps our Baptist divine would not be in great danger of a fine were tho old Blue-laws in force. A minister, whose work-day is Sunday, and who has all the week to recreate in, may not cafe to go on Sunday excursions down the bay or among the hills and were people generally paid a good salary for going to church twice on Sunday with the whole week for recreation, they would have no excuse for, and very little inclination to, Sunday excursions. But as this does not happen to be the case, we fail to see why the personal preferences of the Sunday working-man should be made the law for those who are compelled to work six days out of every seven. Somehow ministers lrnve an unconscious habit of looking on other men as made for their convenience, and seem always to imagine that the chief end of man is to be preached to.—Golden Age.
BRIDK VS. BRIDEGROOM.—Mr. Spillman had just married his second wife. On the day after the wedding Mr. S. remarked "I intend, Mrs. Spillman, to enlarge my dairy." "You mean our dairy, my dear," replied Mrs. Spillman. "No," quoth Mr. Spillman, "I intend to enlarge my dairy. •Say our dairy. Mr. Spillman."* 'No, my dairy." 'Say our dairy, say our scroamod she, seizing the poker. "My dairy, my dairy!" yelled the husband. "Our dairy, our dairy!" screeched the wifo, emphasizing each word with a blow on the back of her cringing spouse.
Mr. Spillman retreated under the bed. In passing under the bed-clothes his hat was brushed off. He remained under cover several minutes, waiting for a lull in the storm.
At length his wife saw him thrusting his head out at tho foot of tho bed, much like a turtle from its shell. "What are you looking for?" exclaimed the lady. "I am looking for our hat, my dear," said ho.
ABOUT ASI RACIIAN.—Astfaeh'an furts the skin of tho Astrachan Iamb. From ten to fifteen skins are required to make a cloak. These cloaks vary in prices fVom $20 to 8100. Astrachan is the name of a country somowhere near the North Polo, and belongs to Russia, I believe. The mother of the lamb is killed before the- lamb Is born, in order that the lamb's skin may be in the best required condition. Tho natural color is a sort of gray or dirty white. The white Ast rachan is produced by bleaching, while the black is dyed. This fur is never curled. What often passes for Astrachan—a close curled surfaced material—Is Persia lamb's wool and both come in
a
variety of colors. It is a
yard and a half wide, and ranges in rice from $5.50 to fll.50 per yard, 'hey are much used for cloaks and cloak trimmings, etc. It Is a staple commodity now, in the line of fashionable furs and cloths.
PRESKNCK OP MIND.—If a person in a house on fire will have presence of mind to apply a damp cloth or handkerchief to his mouth and nostrils, he can effect a passage through the densest smoke, but the surest way would be to envelop the head and face completely in a damp cloth.
COUNTERFEITS—It is an easy matter to distinguish the genuine Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy from the spurious imitations in the market, the genuine having printed upon the outside wrapper the words "It. V. Pierce, M. D., Sole Proprietor, Buffalo, N. Y." Also has upon wrapper the Doctor's private U. S. Government stamp, bearing upon it his portrait, name and address, which of itself is a perfect guarantee of genuineness. f»7S
