STRANGE PETRIFACTION?*
SA OnKAT NATURAL CURIOSITY!
Human Heart Kicked About on the Streets of the City!
A printer employed in this office yesterday discovered among the stones of common gravel recently applied to Main street by Street Commissioner Voorhees, a perfect petrified human heart, which is now on exhibition at our counting-room. This ossification 0/ the sentimental part of a human r^body bad been kicked about upon the street for many days, and was liable to be crunchcd at any moment beneath the wheels of some ponderous vehicle.
Contemplating it we find it difficult to realize that this lump of solidfied substance was once the headquarters of an arterial system which supported human life. Many conjectures have been advanced concerning its origin by savants who have flocked to our sanctum to examine this specimen. Some tliink it belongs to a pro-historic ago, back a few millions of years anterior to the invention of Webster's spelling book, opera houses, artesian wells, SATL'RI»AV KVKNINO MAJI.H, and other outgrowths of a high civilization. This would refute the Darwinian theory completely, as this is the heart of the archant, or human mammal, and not of the monkoy. Others, aided by a local legend, believe it is the heart of an Indian chief, I'e go-in-chuck-i-hick-i-giz-zard, who hold forth in these parts early in the present century. This chief (we will call him I'. for short) meta dusky maiden, Ke-kl-yi-ho-a-mu-sl-ag-no, on the sito of the old Indian Orchard, in Sibleytown, and commenced a harmless flirtation which ended in his losing his hnurt completely. Thero are good reasons for believing that the heart before us was tint property of I'., the gallant chief. A photograph of the petrifaction has been forwarded to Captain William Ivirle, who was well acquainted with 1\, and will probably bo able to recognizo his property. Ke-ki-tVc., was a noted heart-smasher, ller wigwam was located on the river bank noar the city cemetery. Street Commissioner Voorheos is satisfied that a gravel bank of great valuo will be found under the site of her residence, as all the braves of the I'otawatamies, Sioux, ('iiinaiichert, Mlfciuies, and other tribes lost (heir hearts in that vicinity. Others insist that its origin is still more modern, and that it is the property of
Henjamln 1\ Butlrr, who is represented as a heartless man. Wo are not the partisan of any ono of tlicso conjectures. The petrifaction, alas, cannot speak for itself. We will only hazard the opinion that it belonged to a hard,.^4 «n*ilUl»vun ill this city has lost a heart ho can have the petrifaction by proving property and paying lor this notico.
