TRANSLATION.]
T,F W -V PARIS, July 18th, 18(i7. Jfc.s.vr.v. N'ciitiray it- Sons, Xne york-O'rn-tlrnirn: Having occasion to become acquainted at Warsaw with one of your instruments, constructed alter your new system, and in consideration ot the grandeur of tone, as well as the delicate effects which I could accomplish in playing on this admirable instrument, a worthy interpreter of great musical ideas, I have the honor to ask you herewith to send me a similar Instrument to Moscow, for the Conservatory of which I am director.
I doubt not that it will materially contribute to the progress of my numerous pupils, as it enables them to modulate the tone at pleasure, thus developing their individuality. I think that with these advantages, no one can reproach the Piano as being an ungrateful instrument. Your new system has made it eloquent, as if by magic and I fear not of being charged with exaggeration in saying that it sings, it warbles, it thunders, according to the inspiration of the pianist.
Accept, gentlemen, my warmest compliments, and give your prompt attention to my order. JOSEPH IKNIAWSKI.
