What an oasy thing it is to drive a locomotive, says the National Gir llnililrr. Pull a lever, away she goos push it, she slacks up and stops. That's all. The quick eye, firm hand, prompt courage, the knowledge of every furlong of the road, tho putting on steam on an ascent, or the shutting otT on down grade, the difference of expansion in the rails between hot and cold, wet and dry, and the perpetual risk of life and limb and property are matters unknown to people who pay their fares take their tickets, and get to their journey's end. All tho whilo their lives liavo been in the hands of a grimy looking man, at the end of tho train, whom, if they meet him on the platform, they avoid, lust they should soil their silks or kerseymeres by tho eontact. These men sfiould be, and often are scientifically educated but they have no social position, and their wages are absolutely inadequate to their responsibilities. The conductor is a personage of consideration, the petted of passengei-s, and tlie respected of directors. The engineer is a mere melianic. The world is full of irregularities and injustice.

Mil. Foknkv, in ono of his astonishing articles in favor of protection, asserts that "home consumption of homo manufactures is an unfailing test of prosperity and therefore tho Iioston Post advises the Pennsylvanians, if they wish to be prosperous, to adopt a diet of pig-iron.

Travels.—We hnvo

lately been placed in tlie possession of a fact that shows how nearly allied to the reason of a man is the 'instinct of tho brute creation.

Not long since, a lady residing in the interior of Missouri, left her home on a visit to some relatives living in Kentucky, taking with her a favorite dog, On arriving in I-joui.sville she missed her pet, and search and inquiry failing to elicit aught concerning him, she was compelled to continue her journey without him. Fourteen days after tho lady had left her home, the family were surprised at the appearance of "Fido," whom they thought worrying the pigs or "baying the moon," in far oft Kentucky. Not less than nine hundred miles had been traversed by his dogshin, and when it is remembered that he had been brought by rail, and could have had no' trail to lead hirn back to his old quarters—that the Hroad Ohio, and tho still broader Mississippi, not to mention hundreds of streams of smaller proportions, lay between him and iiis puppyhood's home, tin journey was a remarkable one, and r: such must ever distinguish this."dumb brute," as a reinarkablo dog.
