No WELL-REGULATED family can siford to be without the SATURDAY EVKXISO MAIL. It is the mother's friend, the father's companion, the daughter's monitor, the son's carekiller, and the grandfather's comfort and stay. Regular subscribers are rarely troubled with the measles, whooping cough, indigestion, Impecunloslty or bad temper. It has been often remarked that our readers have a cheerfll, happv look which has been called the MAIL grin. The happiest marriages in town have been consummated in consequence of thoroughly reading these columns. On Monday of this week a gentleman stubbed his toe as he went to business and fell, suffering a severe contusion on his right cheek on Tuesday he lost the key to his store in consequence of which bis business was delayed for an hour and three quarters on Wednesday his houso caught fire on Thursday ho lost his pockethook containing thirteen hundred and twen-ty-seven dollars and fifteen cents, and yesterday his baby fell into tho fire. Last night he remembered that he had failed to read last Saturday's MAIL, and lie hunted up the well worn copy and devoured its contents. This morning he received a notification that legacy of $17,932 was awaiting his dis posal in Kamschatka. There is a moral in this little story which cannot fail to make its impress upon the minds of those unhappy persona \vb0 d9 not tako tho MAIL. -. 4

IF there is any subject of public interest which demands more than another, tho consideration of the City Council at this time, it is that of numbering houses. The grading of streets, digging of gutters, repairing of sidewalks and most other improvements, generally receive the prompt attention which their importance demands. But such improvements are often calculated to benefit merely certain localities, while there is not a resident of the city who is not personally interested in the subject of which we speak. We understand that it has boen ten years since tho counsel took any action in this matter. At that time most of the houses were properly numbered. But since then many changes have taken place. Our population is more than double what it was, and the number of dwellings has increased in about tho same ratio. Tho numbers then placed on the houses have been removed, worn out or erased by subsequent painting. What few remain have been made incorrect by buildings which have been erected in tho last decade, consequently less than a score of dwelling houses in the whoie city are numbered corroctly. Now this is not an improvement which will drain the city treasury or materially increase the tax of our citizens. trifle, and the, benefit lasting and great. Will the Couneil consider this subject at an early day, and gratify the earnest wishes of all citizons by immediately adopting a cheap, convenient and systematic method of house numbering?

OUR many citizens who are acquainted with Mrs. Frisby a former resident of this city, and a sister of Mrs. S. E. Moore, will be pleased to learn of her unparalleled suocess as an artist. She is now a resident of St. Ifrnils and is engaged in executing sotnto of tho finest paintings we havo over seen. They are imitations of stained glass, comprising Bible, Scottish Und other rural scones. They are on exhibition at B. G. Cox's book store., Mrs. F. recently had an opportnulty of displaying her exquisito taste in painting tho interior of one of the celebrated Pullman Palace cars to tb« entire satisfaction of tho compa»»y.

Special Xstlcc to the Pubic. I do not lay claim to more of the cardinal virtues than other men, but I long ago saw how important, how absolutely essential in deed it was to the success of my business that I make and maintain a reputation for strict integrity and fair dealing. My business is one of which but few persons can have any practical knowledge, and, therefore, ono which ofl'ers a tempting field for dishonest men. If a man wishes to buy a piece of Jewelry or a watch and knows himself no great Judge of such things, he must, of necessity, trust in a great mniner to the honor of the man of whom he buys. He must not be tempted by cheap prices or skillful talking, but will do better by going to an honest rnan and paying an honest price. This, then, is what I work for. what for years I have been working for, to cam the reputation and the name of being Ktiictly a reliable man. As to my success, I can refer with pride to any business man in Terre-Haute. And now, what I want to impress is this, I have a full and complete assortment of flue Jewelry, Watches, Clocks, Spectacles, and Optical Goods, and will sell anything I have at as low prices as any honest man can, and customers may rely on everything purchased being Just what I represent it.

I inako the repairing of fine watches a specialty, and solicit this kind of work. My store is on Main Street. Inst ween 3d and 4th, Terre-Haute Indiana. 36-lt. W. STATZ.
