ST A HTI.TSO STATEMENTS OF A CITY WORKING WOMAN. We tako the following from a comiiiutiic.itioli appearing in ono of the? f'hirago citv dailifs, frotn th pen of "\vnrking-\voittan\" who, we tinder«nnfl, a near relative of a distinguished American authoress, mid who liitterly knowH of that of which siio writew: I

Anna Dickenson, during her lirst Iabor.s in the lecture field, related a touching Hlory of a foor girl who passed tiirough every pha»e of want and wretchedness, until she drifted into th.it sad streim into which .so many drifl, find w.m tarried swiftly down its murky tide until the wide ocean of sin and shame received her wretched life, where sli" tossed and struggled until d"ath. This one ease, set forth with higli dramatic coloring, pathetically related. moved theaudience to tears and yet it was hut an oil. reiterated tale of a poor, st ruggluigbcwinggirl doing "slopwork" for a pittance, and often heing turned away without her miserable, earnings, on the plea that her work was not properly done. Crowds left I ho lecture room with hearts full of indignation at this onegreat wrong—this wholeMale rohhery oft he poor half-fed, wing girl and vet the great wrong goessteadily on. \Ve need no Anna (Dickenson, sweet, pleading voices, to toll us of this wrong we have hut to answer ono of the many advertisements calling lor "experienced sewing machine operators (none other need apply) at certain popular sewing machine depots. You go as did a friend of mine, if you wish for work, or to investigate the matter, and are gent, she wn.'t,

My friend, upon hearing the inducement, and being asked if she were a good operator, answered:-—"I have been a machine operator for thirteen years, and though I want work, 1 don't think 1 have spent all that time in order to work for went v-live cents a day." A woman, prohalily a victim, no doubt dilven to this last resort from absolute want, sitting at one of the machines, answered desperately: "A girl cannot earn her salt at this rate."

I have no doubt she kept her place, even after this imprudent speech, for the demand for work-women was largo, and I hope there are ft»w women, even considering the miser}* and actual want swarming this great oily, who would wrong their sister workmen so much as to consent to work for such arvation wages—hence, no one, probably, is overdisohargod from thatotlioe.

A tew weeks since, the city papers related how a young lady had been arrested for pawning a sewing machine for which she had not yet paid. She bought it of one of the manv Arms who advertise mnehines, promising to furnish work to enable buyers to nay for them. The otVer seemed good on the fhoe, but the sequel showed too sadly the actual fraudulenevofthearrangomont. 1 know the lady well. Day by day she would pass me in the ha\ls of our lodging plaiv, looking more like a frightened ghost than anything earthly. I visited her in her room. It was an inner room, lightened only from the halls, such as we often see in our large public buildings. The only furniture she jHsscssed, was lier sewing machine and trunk. 1 ler bed consisted of mattress placed upon either a box or chairs. A few chairs lclonglng to the liuitdtug had been lent her. and these completed the furniture of this room, where »h" toileil early and late, at her mnchiuc. Sho told mo one day that. Vork as hard as she could, she could only make seventy-five cents per day. I know for mome time her sole food was bread and milk, and that not too often. Her work was tucking shirts, and she usually u.annged to finish three a day, working late. She showed me one." It was tucked half way of the skirt, in half-inch lucks, ami it seemed to me as if everv tuck should have been marked Indelibly, "One step nearer destruction." For »o it wan to Iwr. When she found health and strength failing, ami her taee grew thinner each dav, and the look in hereyes grew more wild and desjwrate when her hope of anything better foiled, she resorted to wliat many a poor, proud woman has done before,—she pawned her machine, trusting in Proviacne* tor the help to enable ner to redeem il. She did not mean to defraud hercmiitors but they ascertained the facts at length, and she was arrested, impriwjned, und Buffered everything a proud, sensitive nature could suffer under the eireomstancew,

A Mend aitslstcd h©r at thin point, and she was liberated on ball. The next we heard she had disappeared, Mid what iwirt ofthe earth holds her poor aching heart we do not know but memory of her white ftaee will evprbmint me, aa I wish it could ever follow, and haunt those Shy locks of our city who wear out "human creature**" in this unholy lust for gain. Cannot this matter I*# agitated once more in a mors forcible manner than ever before? Oh, ve who weep and groan over the Bleary and frarnil growth of the 'ineUI evil**

growth of the '•wocisl evil** i*, turn your philanthropic

pm to this on* groat omnia of lis growth. Regan I (Am one mi in the

light of a social upas tree and, uproot it in our tnidist, and thouaanas of hearts will thank you and blew you, and tbouannda of home* be madt* comfortable, where now lurks the (lends of want and the sister of sin, waiting to seize upon their despairing prey.

S. :t^OMK'AL CO?SCIIh'N'ES.

Dr. Doran tells of a comical coincidence of which the rector, curate and congregation of Western village were the victims. The rector and his curato both returned to their duty, after a long absence, upon the same day. The curate took the morning service and preached so well as to astonish his hearers. In the evening the rector, who had officiated in a neighboring parish in the morning ascended the pulpit, and rather surprised his Hook by giving out the same text as the curato had chosen in the forenoon. Their surprise became puzzled wonderment when they found it was not only the same text but the same sermon and one can imagine the horror of the listening curate. The fact was, rector and curate had each purchased some lithographed sermons, and were so unlucky as to inaugurate their return home with the same one. (iood as this story is, it is

capped by the misadventure attending three young candidates for a Scotch ministry. The first one put upon his trial, while putting on his robes, happened to descry an ancient-looking wellworn roll of paper, which proved to be a sermon upon the text, "Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents." Seeing that the old sermon was much better than iiis new one, the asp rant to pulpit honors took possession of it, delivered it as his own, and then returned it to its old resting-place. The sermon was a good one, and and plaased the hearers, although they would have preferee! one delivered without book. Great was their astonishment the following Sunday when preacher number two treated them with the same sermon from the same text but it was too much for Scottish patience when a third minister, falling into the same trap, commenced his sermon by anouncin that "Jacob was a plain man, dwellin in tents and one old woman relieved the feeling of her foilow-sutlerers by exclaiming: "Deil dwell 'mil! Is lie nevergaun to flit? "—f '/Kimbcr-s Journal

H.Mi.—Certain ugly facts concerning the fashionable sedative hydrate of chloral, will probably diminish the frequence of its use. We have the high authority of Dr. 1 lahcrshon fort he statement that its action on the pneumogastric nerve produces bronchial and pulmonary congestion. A fatal ease recently happened in (Juy's Hospital, London. Another F.nglish physician Dr. Shettle, of the Royal Herkshin Hospital, staled in his recent lecture the Reading Pathologic Society, that forminate of soda is Irequently produce's! in (lie blood by the use of chloral, and that, from its tendency to decompose the blood, it will render hemorrhage very dangerous. obstetric practitioners will not fail to notice the last fact. If is powerful and safe, equalling opium in its pain relieving power. Rut like all anesthetics, the continued use of it is sure to bo hurt In 1 and il it aid congestion it wi r.1 better for a patient to sutler weeks of sleeplessness than to habituate himself to its use.
