Tile people of Sullivan County 'have expressed wholeartedapproval of an editorial in today's Indianapolis Star
ncernmg the appointment of Judge Norval K. Harris as coairman of a committee with Paul Robeson to defend the immunists on trial in New York. , Trie people are appreciative of the fact that The Star
:s published this editorial because it expresses their feeling. I
te Star's large circulation will go a long" way to counteract!
e bad publicity that the judge has given the county. rnu :j x r- n n r j 1 - j 11 .i i !
tue resiuenis 01 ouinvan county are mayjnani mai uie dge has given the impression that the entire county feels he 3oes, and they feel that the efforts of The Star are mmeiidable. They disapprove very strongly of the stand he is taken. The editorial in The Star follows : ! HE DOESN'T SPEAK FOR SULLIVAN -This is a free country, and Judge Norval K. Harris of SJiIIivan Circuit Court has a citizen's right to head a "national committee" to fight the Communist conspiracy trialj as long as he breaks no laws. On the other hand his neighbors in Sullivan have a right to be deeply offended and to take whatever action they see fit as long as they break no laws. JSuIlivan typifies the best in the American small
city; It is made up of decent, hard-working, God-fearing, patriotic citizens who have no use for Red Fascism or anything it stands for. But they realize Harris' new role will 'direct attention to their community. -It is most unusual to say the least, for an Indiana jurist to be hooked up wtth Paul Robeson and his crowd. Some Americans who don't know Sullwan as Hoosiers know it may wonder whether it is an isolated Midwestern stronghold of pro-Communism. That, of course, isn't true. Norval Harris no more represents Sullivan than Henry Wallace rep
resents Iowa, or the United States.

As Sen. Pepper has pointed out, such a move probably ould benefit the smaller city and rural banks more than the
irger institutions. Large depositors in small banks often
mit their accounts to $5,000, placing their excess funds in
irger city banks which they believe provides greater securi
y. lnis, ol course, deprives the smaller banks of usinsr these
