Strikes Help, White Tells Fact Finders By H. D. Quige United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (UP) C. M. White, outspoken president of the Republic .Steel Corp.. told President Truman's stee' fact-finding board today,-that a strike in event of a managementlabor deadlock is "a hell of a good way to work" collective bargaining. White, who started as a steel laborer and worked his way ur in the industry, - expressed his opinions in , frank and colorful language in answer to questions by the board after he had fin

ished his prepared statement. Republic presented its' arguments in the seventh day of the steel industry's case against the steel workers' demands for a 30-cent package fourth-round wage increase. Answers Question In answer to a question by Board Member Samuel I. Resenman, White said he thought that "competition for our products" and "what our market is" should

be the proper criteria for fixing wages. After presenting the

factors he thought should be considered at the bargaining table in a labor dispute, he I added: j

"I think that labor has got to I be just as big as industry in seeing that the right results are reached. If labor is not big enough, then we have got to fight the thing cut. That is the way I look at bargaining, and if they think we are wrong, they strike us, see? That is the way this thing should work. "It is a hell of a good way to work it." Strikes Expensive He added that the steel industry doesn't like strikes, that they are expensive and "very bad." , "But if that is the way it har-

to be worked out why, every strike comes to. and end," he ?aid. "I have never been in one that did not ccme to an end and ther aere worse things than ? strike. Everybody gets a lot ol things off their chests and they say a lot of dirty things and they seem to feel awfully good after it is all over and they are back to work." In his prepared statement, White said that the appointment of the fact-finding board in the steel industry wage dispute "smacks of pprice and wage fixing."
