v. One and One Make Ten
When two Kroger executives were promoted recently, they left their jobs vacant. So other Kroger men moved up to fill the vacancies. This called for additional promotions until the original promotions resulted in promotions for ten other men. At Kroger there's always room at the top and one move up always makes many more.

Cardinals Take National Lead; Yanks, Sox Win By Stan Opotowsky United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, Aug. 18 (UP) For a while it appeared that St.
Louis' repatriated Mexican League pitchers would be the light that failed, but todav a
glimmer of hope for. Fred Martin
snowed the way back to the National League lead. Martin won one taH game on July 4, but that was not very impressive. He entered the game in the third inning but was knocked out by the fifth and got credit for the win by the skin of his teeth. But last night it was different. Last night the sharp featured Martin proved himself under the heaviest of fire, coming in for wearied Al Brazle in the ninth ; inning and lasting out four tense
frames for a 13 inning 4 to 3 CardinaMriumph over the Cincinnati Reds. Yet Martin's tight hurling was only part of his chore. He also knocked in the winning run in the 13th, scoring Country Slaughter a from third base with a slashing single to
lett field. It was a tough . game for the Reds' Kenny Raffensberger to lose; he had won a 12 inning tilt at Chicago Sunday and went the full 13 last night. The Card victory, coupled with Brooklyn's 11 to 7 loss to Philadelphia, hoisted St. Louis back into the league lead, a half game ahead of the Dodgers. The Brooklyn loss, second in a row, was the result of a five run Philly explosion in the eighth inning. That broke up a 5-5 tie
and cost Erv Palica his seventh
loss of the season. He was the third of four Dodger pitchers to perform in the hit-happy game; the Dodgers got 13 hits and the Phils 11. The Braves 'hit, too. They un
leashed a 15 hit attack against the Giants for a 13 to 4 romp. Six of the Brave juns came in the second inning, four of them on Jim Russell's second grand slam homer in the last three
days.
The Pirates and Cubs were rained out.
Tenacious Vic Raschi finally won his 16th game of the season for the New York Yankees, even though it took his sixth try to do it. His six hitter beat the Senators, 4 to 3, when the Yanks scored two runs in the last of the ninth to come from behind. Gene W.oodling's single to center scored Charley Keller with the winning run. Anxious to keep pace with the Yankees, the Boston Red Sox also needed a late spurt. They scored four runs in the 10th to beat the Athletics, 5 to 1, and thus remained three and a half games out .of first pla-ce, leaping back over Cleveland for second position in the standings. ' But while this Red Sox surge was creditable, Cleveland helped a bit by dropping two games to the St. Louis Browns, 10 to 6 and
5 to 2. A four run rally in the eighth won tHe first for the St. Louis club, and a three run spurt in the seventh took care of the second. The White Sox got only two hits, but still beat the Tigers, 1 to 0, for the third straight Sox
shutout.
