Jobless Pay Claims . In State Decrease INJ3IANAPOLIS, AugT 18 (U.R) The Indiana Employment Security Division today reported big "drops in both continued and initial claims for jobless pay. Division Director Everett L. Gardner" said continued . claims dropped 28 per cent to 42,591 from 59,362. Initial claims fell 46
per cent from 15,608. Gardner said the huge drop in initial applications was "not considered significant since tne figure for the week ending Aug. 6 included 7,300 claims from veterans transferring to state payments from Federal. The number o applications filed by job seekers remained about steady last week, Gardner said. Nonagricultural job openings continued to rise "slightly
with increases in more thhan a half of the division's offices.
Vanderburgh Is New Polio Trouble Spot INDIANAPOLIS,V Aug. 18-(U.R) . The total of Indiana's pojio cases climbed again today as more cases were reported by Vanderburgh County, latest area in the state to become a "trouble spot." Dr. George M. Brother of the State Board of Health said there were 471 cases, but no ne,w deaths had been reported and the death toll still stood at 48 with 62 affected by the disease. Vanderburgh's total increased two cases to 33, but no deaths have been reported in the far southwestern county. Brother said the new brought Vanderburgh's incidence per 100,000 to slightly over 20, the point at whirh experts consider an outbreak "above normal." LaPorte and Dubois Counties reported other new cases today.
Brother said the 1949 outbreak already was the second "worst- in recorded Indiana medical history. The 1940 polio epidemic claimed 682 Hoosier victims, and the next highest yearly total was in 1946 when 453 were stricken. Case Breakdown, State health officials said" the Indiana State Fair would not be postponed and school openings would not be delayed unless there was a sharp increase in the number of polio cases. The state board released a breakdown of cases by age. that showed the incidence was heaviest in the l-to-5-year-old group but more fatalities were noted in the 21-to-30 age class. There were 150 cases and five deaths in the l-to-5 age bracket, but 12 deaths out of .only 68 cases in the 21-to-30 group. . Cases and deaths in the other age groups are: under one year, 10 cases and one death; 6-10, 105-9; 11-15, 56-9; 16-20, 39-9; and over 30, 20-3. The breakdown showed males were more susceptible to polio than females. Men and boys contracted, 231 out of 457 cases through , Aug. 16, and 26 male polio victims died. Twenty-two of the 22'6 stricken girls and women died.
