Singing Holidays
Lesson for August 14, 1949
v
IF A CITIZEN of the U.S.A. observed all the holidays that are officially counted as legal, somewhere In his wide country, he would
have 43 days off every year.' Holidays are a national hattlt" in all countries'.'. Not content
with what the law
gives us, we take our personal vacations besides. But how many holidays do we sing about?
(One . might even Dr. Foreman dare to ask, how many are worth singing about") In . the United States, there are known to this writer no New Year songs, none for Decoration day or Laijor day. none for Armistice day, no'ae for the various birthdays celebrated hither and yon. (Who ever heard of a song to commemorate
Thomas Jefferson?) We may nox even sing on our personal vacations, we are too busy working up a suntan. On the other hand, we could
hardly think of Independence flay,
Thankseivine. Christmas and easi
er without being reminded of the
songs that go with them ine star civaniripii Banner or America the
Beautiful for the Fourth of July,
Now Thank We All Our God in No
vember, and all the Christmas ana
Easter carols.
God and Country IT looks as if some kinds of holinrndnpft sones and others
to be a general
rule: If the holiday is specially
patriotic or religious, tnen peopie sing; otherwise they don't. God and country, in short, arouse emo
tion and enthusiasm wtiicn uor ex-
omniat the memory even oi a great
man like Jefferson, or the planting
of a tree, does not. Tins is generauy true throughout the world. It was true In ancient Israel, for many of
the Psalms are holiday hymns, lestival songs. Some years ago a religious denomination issued a new
.hymn book. One minister rounaiy
lenounced the book because It had
introduced a few patriotic hymns.
"Mv Countrv. 'tis of Thee" has no
Jplace in public worship, he said.
If that man had been a clos
er student of the Psalms, he
would not have made such a criticism. Most patriotio hymns
are really prayers for one's
native land; Psalms 105 ana iw
ar onlv two of a number of
: Psalms which are In the best sense of the word patriotic. If the reader will look through
the Psalms for himself, noting all
Ihe references to God and to Israel,
lemembering that Israel was tne
Kame of the poet's country, he will Le rnnvinrpd that in those times
la in these, love for God and love
or country are singable.
Hallelujah
UR word "Hallelujah" is tie-
hrpw and comes from the
kaims. It means "Praise ye,, the
I,ord!" Incidentally, it is a feligius word, and should not be used,
Is it so often is, irreverently or ohtiv Psalms 111-118 in our
I'.ible were sung as a group, and
lalled the Hallel, or the rraise. I'h Hallel wr suns regularly at
lie three great holiday festivals:
hassover (near our easier ume;,
lentecost (in early summer, ances-
hr of our Whitsunday), and Taber-
lacles (in the fall).
When our Lord had his "Last
Supper" he and his friends
would sine these 'Very Fsaims.
I The "hymn" they sang before they went out was very prob
ably the latter part or this I erouD. 116-118, always sung at
I the end of the Passover meal.
I The note of praise in these alms is very strong. They are
ht in a minor key.

If CJrtJ-' T rtVi. IUUUJ lO tiiai. m. & lin-Christian world, which does
It understand religion at all, has
Iken over our religious holidays
It leaves the religion out. . Ine
I suit is a parody, something witht rhyme or reason. Take a look,
Ixt winter, at Christmas greeting rds for sale. You will find scot-
duds. all sorts of things, more
Isily than you will find true
hristmas messages. ,
For people who are not Chris- "
fians, Christmas is only Xmas,
time for exchanging useless
presents, a time for shopkeep
ers to make money.
Und as for Easter, there are
lies where the big items are only
bunnies and the parade, neither
which has the slightest thing to
with the real Easter.

(CHRISTIAN science. P" SERVICES "Soul" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, August 14. The Golden Text is: "Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones" (Isaiah 57:15). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I Say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 8:1-3). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Sciencf and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "When understanding changes the standpoints of life and intelligence from a material to a spiritual basis, we shall gain the reality of Life, the control of Soul over sense, and we shall perceive Christianity, or Truth, in its divln Principle" (p. 822). "Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God" (p. 209).

What doesa man mean when he says, "Let's get down to brass tacks"? He means that he thinks it's time to discuss the real issue. And that's always a good idea! Nothing is . gained by "beating around the bush." Wise men seels the issue . . . and settle it! vln America there are millions of people who attend and support the Church. There are other millions who do not. What is the real issue on which these two groups disagree? This is the issue: Is man the . self-sufficient master of his world, able to overcome every problem Jby his own strength . . . OR is man the noblest creation of an all-powerful God, weak in the face of life's turmoil when he stands alone, but strong when he joins heart and hand with God?, You're a man and you've seen something of life! Getting down to brass tacks . . . are you stronger WITH GOD or without?,
