ployed 17 men when it was examined in June by Inspector J, P. Sheridan.

magazine between inspections, plRrtric blasting cables were short-circuited at the ends, and the shop repair pit was guarded adequately, Inspector Sheridan stated. He added that additional first aid materials were purchase during the inspection. A permanent magazine of approved construction should be provided for storing high explosives and black powder, Sheridan stated, also recommending a permanent or box-type magazine for detonators, display of warning signs near the magazines, and clean surrounding areas. Stranded wires should not be used in the blasting circuit, it was advised. Recommending the sloping of the highwall in the box cut as much as possible and the removal of loose material, the inspector also advocated the grounding of tipple motors and the wearing of safety toe shoes by all employees and protective hats by those exposed to falling objects.
Snow Hill Coal Mines Inspected
Although endorsing more than a dozen recent saftey improvements and other desirable features at the Wabash and Green Valley mines of the Snow Hill Coal Corporation, about five miles northwest of Terre Haute, Ind., a reinspection report released today by the Bureau of Mines proposes additional safeguards. The Vigo County mines
employed a total of 379 men and"
produced 2,362 tons of ooal a day when Inspector Frank Perz completed his examination in June. While approving the prompt removal of explosive gas detected at three places in the Green Valley mine the inspector said more air was needed at some working places, the air current should always be strong enough to dilute and carry away flam
mable or harmful gases, air passages should always be driven at proper intervals, and fire boss examinations should be started not more than four hours before the first shift enters the mine. He also recommended employing not more than 75 men on a split of air, and using line brattices when necessary to remove gases. Inspector Perz said explosive coal dust should be effectively allayed at its source in both mines, coal dust accumulations should be removed from the Green Valley mine, heavier rock dusting was needed in some places in both mines, and it should always be carried to with in 80 feet of the faces. He approved using permissible explosives and Airdox, a permitted blasting device, but he said the Airdox blowdown valve should always be at least 45 feet from a face and around a right angle. bering plan; always setting sufficient safety posts and perma
nent timbers. Other recommendations included completion of eliminating haulage and electrical hazards and compliance with the company's rule banning the carrying
of matches and other flame-making devices in the mines. Recent improvements included wearing metal identification tags fastened to their lamp belts by' the underground employees, and placing supplies of rock dust at
each vetilation door for firefighting use, and properly insulating the compressed air line as
