The Cleveland Indians continued
their comeback charge in the American League pennant rae i today,' but they weren't gaining much ground. The trouble seems to be that I although the Indians are win-1 ning ball games, so are the New York Yankees. The world champions never will be able to overhaul the front-runners this way. Apparently snapping out of the losing lethargy which plagued them last month, Cleveland's i prides have won six of their last
seven games. But the Yankees have won 10 of their last ,12. Consequently, that Indian victory streak has just gained one game in the chase. On July 1 Cleveland was 7 games out of first. Today they're 6 games out. Both teams won yesterday. Cleveland beat the White Sox, 8 to 2, at Chicago and the Yankees snapped Philadelphia's five-game winning streak tt Philadelphia, 6 to 2. Pitching Better 'Perhaps as significant as the Cleveland winning consistency is the improvement, much, needed in the pitching. Bob Lemon won his ninth of the season and showed great tightening-up ability in the process. He was belted for five hits in the first two innings but allowed only four the rest of the way while the Cleveland big guns - barked out 17 safeties. Lemon's continued good hurling and the fact that Bob Feller won four out of his last five give much hope.
The Cleveland hitting, too, , was all that could be desired j yesterday. A four-run blast in .
the fourth settled the game, and included was a triple by Lemon and Douglas by Lou Boudreau and Larry Doby. The Yanks made their lead over second-place Philadelphia five full games with the win last night. Hank , Bauer's fourth
tory for the uiants, n, to d.over
Philadelphia, and Cincinnati beat the Cubs, 7 to 6, on Bobby Adams' triple and Ted Kluszewski's ensuing single.
Showers Help State Wheat Storage Problem
INDIANAPOLIS, July 8 (UP) Showers over Hoosierland the
last two days have helped re- j lieve the wheat marketing situa- j tion by slowing down a run on elevators. j Grain experts said today that a serious shortage of railroad cars at the peak of the wheat harvest had closed many elevators. I But rain temporarily reduced j the volume of grain flowing to storage centers, they said, j Elevators Close I Elevators closed when their binS were filled and boxcar shortages prevented them from , shipping the grain elsewhere. Freeman Bradford, secretary of the Indianapolis Board of
Trade, said increased use of
