Cardinals Muff Another Chance To Tie Dodgers By Stan Opotowsky United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, July 7. (UP) The St. Louis Cardinals stuck

tenaciously today to the classic philosophy of try, try. try again. I And they may even take over the National League lead that way if the season lasts long enough. I Last night, for the fourth time in 10 days, they blew a chance :to go into first place in the standings as. a result of a Brooklyn defeat. J Eddie Dyer's crew was within an inning of that elusive league lead last night.

The results of the Dodger game clattered in over the ticker (Boston 7, Brooklyn 5-and the Cards were leading the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3 to 1, at ;h.e end of the eighth. One more inning and St. Louis would be in a tie with Brooklyn for the lead. Ah, but what an inning that one more turned out to be. Five straight Pirate hits without an out. and the final score was Pittsburgh 4, St. Louis 3. All the hits were singles. To add insult to the Cardinal injury, the winning pitcher was Murry Dickson, who had lost il games this season. The victory was his third. Tommy Holmes proved the Dodgers' undoing with n tworun homer in the eighth. It was his third in three games and his third hit of the night. Vern Bickford made the game his 11th win for the Braves, tops to date in the National League.

Walker Cooper rapped out six hits in his first six times up, three of them three-run homers, and drove in 10 runs to give Cincinnati a horrendous 23 to 4 victory over Chicago. The Reds got 26 hits. The Giants and the Phillies were rained out. In the American League the improving Cleveland Indians suffered a momentary relapse when they bowed to the Chicago White Sox, 9 to. 6, on Steve Couchock's bases loaded eighth inning double. It was a tough one for the Indians to lose, for they had come from behind to tie the score with a four run rally in the top of the eighth. Ellis Kinder pitched the Boston Red Sox to a 5 to 0 win over the Washington Senators. The game was called after the fifth because of rain, and until then Kinder had allowed only four hits.. Jerry Priddy's single with the bases loaded in :he 13th gave the St. Louis Brownies a 6 to 5 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Indians Tie Saints For Association Lead

By Unite3 Press The Indianapolis Indians' Nanny Fernandez belted an eighth inning homer off league-leading St. Paul last night that tied his club for the American Association lead.

I In other games, Milwaukee I swamped Louisville 17 to 2 at Milwaukee, Kansas City edged Columbus 4 to 3 at Kansas City, and Minneapolis beat Toledo 8-2 , at Minneapolis. j. Fernandez' homer broke a 5-5 tie and nosed out the Saints 6 to 5 at St. Paul. The starting battery for the Saints had starred' in the hitting department too, I picking up four of the Saints j runs in the second. Catcher Far- ' rell Anderson and Starting Pitcher Jim Romano both hit tworun homers. But the Indians scor ed two each in the second and third and one in the fifth to set the stage for Fernandez' winning run. The Blues owed their win to , the margin Jim Delsing's two- ! run homer gave them in the first inning. They got one each in the fourth and fifth while ;Ernest Groth was holding the j Redbirds to one in the first and .two in the eighth. Milwaukee made 17 hits do for 1 17 runs, scoring off Louisville's 1 Ewald Pyle and Dick Palm aljmost at will for the first seven i innings.
