Tony's Christmas Wish And How If Came True

NEW YORK The sun shone bright and hot on a hospital bed and cast a golden glow on the boy's wan face. . I "If you could have any Christmas gift you wanted, what would you wish for, Tony?" asked the social worker who sat by his bed, her mind busy " with thoughts of candy, toys and spangled Christmas trees. Th boy's bright blue glance flicked downward to the crippled legs' in a look that was like a wirrce of pain. Then the thin little face shone with a glow that transformed it. "I'd wish I could walk," he whispered. . Ten days later Tony was wheeled downstairs and . into the hospital's occupational therapy workrooms tilled with tools and paint and abuzz with work. First he was put to work making blocks, then he advanced to building a birdhouse and finally he , learned to use the bicycle saw. Day after day the crippled legs turned the wheel that sawed wood; day by day the muscles strengthened. Two weeks before Christmas braces were fitted on .Tony. On Christmas day he walked slowly but steadily through the hosnital corridors, stars shining in his eyes. Tony's Christmas wish came true because of the work of the Occupational Therapy Committee of the New . York Junior League composed of league members and professional therapists in 17 New York hospitals. The committee, headed by Mrs Henry Webster, runs a six weeks course which trains volunteers tc" teach occupational therapy. They in turn, go into New York hospitals and, working under professional therapists, teach handicapped children and grown-ups hand work that will take their minds off

pain and heartache and-strengthen weakened bodies. I Leather is worked into wallets and belts, string plaited into dog collars and leashes and old copper pots are beaten into new ashtrays and bowls while hours fly by to the tune of songs, without a thought of fear or pain. Similar work' is done by the i Junior Leagues of Dayton, Ohio; Louisville, Ky.;' Indianapolis, Ind.; Wilmington, Del.; Tacoma,

Wash.; Portland, Ore.; Kansas

City, Mo., and Wichita, Kas. The New York Leagues Occupational Therapy Committee which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year,, gleans much of the materials used in its work from its own scrap bags. More material is donated by manufacturers. The committee is so much "interested in improving the designs used , in the occupational therapy articles that it has wrapped up its findings in a book of designs and a traveling show illustrating them, which will soon start around the United States on loan exhibition. Finally, the New York League committee will assemble the bright birdcages and doll houses, wallets, leashes, belts and other

things made by the occupational therapy patients for one of two annual sales held in the League Club house, 221 East 71st St. The proceeds will be ploughed back into the work, which has brightened thousands of Christmas trees with gifts and thousands of lives with happier hours and better health.

Flies Getting Used to It SAN FRANCISCO (UP) Common house flies are not dying off like flies any more and it is worrying University of California scientists. Flies apparently are becoming resistant to DDT. It now takes 50 times the normal dosage of DDT to kill 95 per cent of the flies sprayed.

Remember

your greetings from Uncle Sam back in 1942? It went ccmething like this - -

"FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO JOHN DOE: Greetings: You have been selected ..."

Your greetings are sent from the hearts of a nation and a world of grateful people, saying "FROM THE FREEDOM-LOVING PEOPLES OF THE WORLD TO 'CIVILIAN JOE' Greetings: Your service that stemmed from more than duty was the balm of peace on the wounds of war; your deeds have lighted a beacon that can never be dimmed as long as God's heaven and earth shall stand."
