Federal Pay Increases The commission headed by Herbert Hoover, our only living ex President, has recommended' that top governmental officials be given a pay boost. All the top men from, the President down through the heads of agencies would be given this raise should Congress adopt the plan. It is about time that something of that sort be done. Mr. Truman, as President; draws a salary of $75,000 a year. The King of England gets about $1,500,000 a year. And Mr. Truman is infinitely more concerned with the government here than George VI is in England. But it doesn't stop there. The commission has approved a boost for the Vice-President, members of Congress, Supreme Court Justices, cabinet officials, and others. This government could use better men in the positions of importance. As things are now, a man usually must take
a salary cut to be named to a top post. For example, Secretary ! of State Marshall gets $15,000 a year. (Joan Crawford gets more than $100,000 a year.) Mr. Marshall is entitled to draw a bigger salary for the tremendous job he is doing.
If a man wants to be in the government, he must have an independent income that will mean that he won't have to depend on his governmental salary for a livelihood. We need, those men who are holding down the top-salaried positions with industry in the government. But most
- f them are dependent on their incdmes from those jobs for their subsistence. If the government would offer a bigger in-' come, perhaps we would get tjiose men in the government. ' The fact that Mr. Hoover is a former President; the ; fact that the commission was a non-partisan group ; the fact '
witu -vj. wvtltl Alldi 111 ClOlUllWUll WHICH WC VUUIU gCU for better salaries, and the fact that the proposed increases will .amount to only a million dollars a year makes the idea worthwhile. We hope Congress passes it.

The Missus "Ducks" Out
Slim Hartman took his missus duck hunting the other day. And after five hours of sitting in a swamp, she'd had enough! Going home, Slim reminded her goodnaturedly of the time she'd taken him to a woman novelist's lecture, and insisted that he sit it out. So now the missus and Slim have an understanding. No more duck hunting for her no more lectures for him. They decided each to his own taste. It's because they can agree to disagree like that, I think, that
Slim and the missus get on so well content to stay home nights together, enjoying one another's company over a glass of beer and a game of chess. From where I sit, we can't all enjoy the same things but we can share those little pleasures that we do enjoy a glass of beer, a game of chess, some music 0 the radio and live-and-let-live when it comes to the others.
