JOBS UPON A TIME Albert Spalding, noted violinist and composer for the violin, was born in New York City of the Spalding sporting goods family. The family alternated during the year between living in New Jersey and Florence, Italy, as he tells in his autobiography. .Rise to Follow. A gift of a small violin at Christmas started Spalding on his way as a professional. He studied in Florence where he won the highest honor for his age (14) at the Bologna Conservatory. Three years of barnstorming in Europe were followed by enlistment in World War I, where he rose from private to lieutenant. Since then Spalding has devoted himself to the concert stage. He has played with most of the world's most important symphony orchestras. The Spaldings live in Great Barrington, Mass., where he swims, golfs and reads mystery stories for relaxation. .
