The Old Nature , This is entirely from man lost, guilty, fallen man ; it is human and polluted. Every evil thought or deed springs from this old nature, which can never be improved. In Scripture it is called "the carnal nature", cr the flesh; the oM man. in distinction to that which is a new man in Christ Jesus. It is corrupt and can never be anything else (Eph. 4:22; f!cl. 3:5-9). Reform cannot change its character. A drunkard might reform and stop drinking; a woman cf the streets become respectable, but both still be on their wav to eternal damnation. Some men and women are restrctablv. mcrpHv and 'eiWousIy gointr to hell, with the murderers, the, vilest and offsccurinsr of humanity. It is. of course, better for society to have its members moral and decent.;' hut unless they are born again they are but lest sinners.' In fact, the moral and religious who are not born again are frequently filled with rride and self-right-ecusnessress. hating God and despising the Blood, of
Christ which is Cod's only way cf salvation and cleansing from s;n. God hates pride. When on e-rth cur Lord stigmatized the proud, self-righteous, religious leaders, as a brood cf viners. unable to escape the damnati3n of hell
'(Matt. 23:33). Such a term He neve" applied to the publicans and sinners who drew near to Him for to hear Him. In the eld nature, the flesh, good does not dwell: it is enmity ag-inst God : it is not subject to the lnw of God neither indeed can it be; thev that are in the flesh, that is, those who only have the old nnture, cannot pleas'? God: the eld nature mens death. The natunl man. without Christ, is carnal, sold under sin (Rom. 7:14. 18; 8:6-8, 13). The heart of the natural man is evil from his youth, eve-v imagination and thought of his heart only evil continually (Gen. 6:5) .'It is the flesh, the old nature which produces "adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness. idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness revellinsr, and such like: they which do such things shall net inherit the Kingdom of God" (Gal. 5:19-21). Even the very righteousness, the rocd acts, of a sinner, are as filthy rags in the sight of God. for they are all stained with sin (Is. 64:6). God alone knows the heart of man and savs that it i3 deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; literally incurable (Jer. 17:9, 10). Our Lord, when on earth, God manifest in flesh, knew the heart of man and gave a similar testimony (Matt. 15:1820). The Holy Saint, in His inspired record of the natural man. who would not have God in his knowledge, gives a terrible picture of what men are bv nature when they are away from God (Rom. 1 :29-32) . Solomon, the world's wisest man. remind us in Proverbs 27:19, "As in water face answereth to face, so the heart cf man to man." All have sinned. It is true that by early training and breeding and the customs of society, these things may be hid in the heart: but they are there ready to burst forth at any time as occasion may arise. This is why people are surprised when respectable men and women sometimes launch into a career of evil! The evil was in the heart all the time ready to show itself. This is why respectable, moral, religious peopie must be torn again, born of God, ere they can either see or enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:3, 5-7). Without Christ they are dead in trespasses and sins, walking in "subjection to the evil one, the prince and god of this world ; fulfilling the desires of the flesh, the vile passions; or of the mind, fhe self-righteous wickedness. All are by nature children of wrath (Eph. 2:1-5). - (Advertisement)
