THE NEIGHBORS didn't know , what Tabitha's ideas were. She never went down in history as a great thinker What church she at

tended, whether she ever took part in a prayer-meeting, what her spiritual life was like, ' the neighbors did not say. But they cried when she was dead. She was a good woman, they knew. When Simon Petei came that way,

they did not tell him about Tabitha's prayers or her peac3 of conscience. No. doubt she hr.d these. But what the! neighbors brought in to show hotf good their friend had been, was "coats and garments." All made by hand, h hands; made for" her poorer neighbors, widows. In . those days widows were not protected by life insurance, social security or annuity plans. Thej could not go out and earn big ' money in factories. To be a widow, as -a rule, meant to be in need oi help. Too many of them starved. So ..Tabitha spent h-r time making clothes for the widows of her city. -., Full of Good Works rpHE BIBLE says she was "full JL of good works." It does not say ghe, was -11 of faith or full of love. Just full of good works. We can be pretty sure the faith and love, the religion, was there, but it was the good works that people noticed. -Religion in Tabitha's house was translated into the language of roats and skirts. Religion always has to be translated into something we can understand. . Religion uses words, of course; books full of them. We cannot get along without them. They stand for something. But where the Christian religion is con- - rerned, we cannot stop witb words. Weuld They Want You Back? rpHERE MUST have been a num. A her of deceased Christians in Joppa, but the only one who seems to . have been worth a miracle to bring back to lite was tms woman, Tabitha, or Dorcas. Her life was over, yet it was a life worth living again. . . - How many people would be worth bringing back to life again? How many funerals would the neighbors want done in reverse? Not many, maybe, but if the neighbors voted at each funeral, as they did at Tabitha's, on the question, "Do we want this person back "again?" they .would usually vote for people like Tabitha, whose religion was all hand-sewn. ' What Is Service? SERVICE IS a word much used in Christian circles. We even have the world around us using the word. Department stores, government agencies, radio manufacturers, fill

ing stations, all offer service

trouble is that much of this is something for Which you have to pay. -. And much so-called service is sim- " ply mending something that was not done right in the first place. . Tabitha's service was of a different kind. It was genuine tfoing for people who couldn't do much for themselves and who certainly could , not do anything in return.

Even among Christians, when we

"Mind" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, August 22 The Golden Text is: "The Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding" (Proverbs 2:6). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king: Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and Wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like" (II Chronicles 1:11, 12). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Sci'ence and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "God is not seDarate from the wis

Her only opportunity was a" poor city filled with poor people. Her only talent was one . most r women have: Plain sewing. ' Yet the TabithaS, the Dor- " cases, make the backbone of , Christianity. They are the salt - of the church, the salt of the " earth. ,' In your own town, in your own community, if the , Christian religion is loved and respected, it is not because of "the famous preachers; it is be- " cause of the humble doers, the ' people whose Christian religion ' goes to their hands. . The clues point unquestionably to my own Mama and Daddy. And the victim, Watson ... it looks as though I am doomed to be the victim. No . . . there is no evidence of foul play . . . just CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE! You see, my dear Watson, I am approaching the age when a young fellow ought to begin attending Sunday School. But my parents haven't made any plans for my religious training! Surprising? Not at all; an inevitable consequence. My parents, Watson, have not been giving sufficient thought to their own spiritual needs. Ah, but there is still time to prevent the crime! We will warn my parents by noting our deductions here in the newspaper. And then, Watson, we may jolly well be certain that my parents' affection for me will make apparent to them the only sensible solution. See you in Sunday School, Watson!
