Ebed-Melech, The Ethiopian ' Lesson for August 8, 1948

ARE you ready for a real story? Then turn to Jeremiah 38, and (read on to verse 18 In the 39th thapter. This interesting story reveals a hero, Ebed-

melech, by name, which means "the king's slave." This

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES "Spirit" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, August 8. " The Golden Text is: "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly"

the hero of our story, and a very admira-, ble hero, indeed. I He was a Negro' and Ethiopian eunuch, in charge of

the king's chambers. Zebekiah, es the story reveals, held Ebed-melech in high esteem. Was, obviously, a most honorable! 'man. How he had come to know; Jeremiah, and to esteem him so ' highly, is a subject for profitable icontemplation. The devotional read teg, Matthew 25:31-46, offers final ppinlon on the value of Ebed-,' melech's ministry to Jeremiah. The golden text, "As we have therefore

allow him to draw Jeremiah out ol the mire in the dark dungeon. ' He knew that Jeremiah would soon die, in this awful place, and Ebed-1 melech risked his life in making the request to rescue Jeremiah. The

wonder is that the princes had not ordered Ebed-melech slain. Evi-

kindness to a man of another race,

so may we today serve God and civilization by good will and kindly service to all races. ' FREEDOM THROUGH A SLAVE THE story of Ebed-melech's kindness to Jeremiah lifts to en' nobling example the act of a' slave on behalf of freedom. The world's1 benefactors are those who understand freedom, and cas.t themselves in utter self-forgetfulness into the struggle for right against wrong. What had Jeremiah done to receive such harsh treatment? He

had delivesd God's message to j the people of Jerusalem, warning ' them that the city would be taken ' by the Chaldeans, and how they

afcght escape destruction. Jeremiah was proclaiming freedom not always a popular course. For this effort to help the people, he was thrown into the muddy dungeon. This servant of the king was the only man in Jerusalem who understood the purpose of Jeremiah. A FRIEND INDEED RANTED permission from the

Little boys sometimes fall out with their playmates and they have a childish spat. These little tiffs seldom amount to anything more than 'a tongue stuck out, an ugly face, and maybe a threatening, gesture. The causes of these juvenile clashes are usually soon forgotten. If grown-ups could patch up their disagreements and quarrels as easily as children can, we would have better neighborhoods, better homes, and better human relations. And if nations could be induced to seek a peaceful settlement of international differences, instead of resorting to war, it would put an end to untold human misery and years of heartbreaking desolation. Religion is the only influence that can turn men's minds from war and strife to the ways of peace and goodwill. By attending the services of the Church regularly, and by supporting its local, foreign mission, and world relief programs, you will make a real contribution to world peace and goodwill among men.
