Merchants Beat New Goshen By 7 To 4 Score Bill Shipman and Ebbie Robertson teamed up yesterday to lead the Sullivan Merchants to a victory over New Gosheh and keep the locals in a spot where they can tie for fourth place in the Western Indiana League. The score was 7 to 4. Shipman hurled six-hit ball for the Merchants, with three of the six . hits coming in the ninth inning ater the locals had piled up a big margin. He struck out five and walked four. Robertson was the hitting star for the Merchants.. He hit a grandslam home run in the sixth inning that was more than enough to give Shipman the victory. Every member of the Merchants played errorless ball, and they each got at least one hit, with Evans, Merchant shortstop, collecting three of them. Yesterday's win was the ninth for the Merchants against four losses. The locals will wind up the regular ,season next Sunday when they tangle with the U. S. Prison nine at Terre Haute. With the West Terre Haute outfit losing to the Commercial Solvents yesterday, the locals are tied for fourth place, and a triumph will make a playoff .game between the two teams necessary. All-Stars Assemble For Grid Classic CHICAGO, Aug. 2. (UP) The most, powerful collegiate Ail-Star football squad in the history of the annual summer classic opened training today at Northwestern University under Coach Frank Leahy of Notre Dame. The collegians, winners of the last two games, will collide with the Chicago Cardinals, champions of the National Football League, 1 in Soldiers Field Aug. 20. Included in the squad are 12 players from Notre Dame's undefeated 1947 team and nine from Michigan's undefeated power- I house of last year. "Squirmin' I Herman" Wedemeyer of St. ' Mary's headed a West Coast contingent which joined the squad today. Leahy coached the All-Stars to a 16-0 victory over the Chicago Bears last year. This season he will be aided in grooming the 71man squad by Andy Kerr of Lebanon Valley, Jeff Cravath of Southern California, Wally Butts of Georgia, Blair Cherry of Texas and Bob Higgins of Penn State.
