For Safety's' Sake: : Accidents over the Christmas holiday have emphasized the need for some sort of safety measures on State Highway
54 through Busseron Bottoms,
41. The highway through the Bottoms is built up, with steep banks on each side. No rails have been placed along the shoulders of the highway to help prevent an automobile fi'bm going down into a ditch full of water should it skid on the road. -. . The State Highway . Department has installed short
posts about a hundred feet apart through the Bottoms to
maik the edge of the shoulder, but even if an automobile skids and hits one of these posts, it is not enough to prevent the vehicle from plunging over into the ditch. One driver did hit one of these rosts last week. His automobile snapped tile pest and hurtled down the embankment, . It would be a simple matter for the' Highway Departrnent to install a guard rail along the nine-tenths of a mile on the highway that is so dangerous. Guard rails have been used successfully on other highways, and some safety measure is urgently- needed in Busseron Bottoms. Such a rail would not only save countless dollars in damagesio automobiles that go into n skid on the slippery highway, buould also gveatly reduce the chance of a motorist OB' a passenger losing his life ,by plunging into the ditch. fC'e hope that something can be. done and done soon, to
