All Mall Subscriptions Strictly In Advance The Housing Problem A contest of two opposed attitudes regarding the nation's housing problem will flare into the open -when the next session of Congress gets down to serious business. According to published reports, Rep. Charles K. Fletcher, Republican of California, declared at a Congressional housing hearjng on the West Coast: "It is positively un-American for so many people to want so many things they cannot have." Two big organizations of housing officials, in a joint report; have called for construction of one and a half million hemes a year twice the present number and recommended passage of the Taft-Ellender-Wagner bill as the only way cf achieving that goal. The two groups the National Public Housing Conference and the National Association of Housing Officiate voiced strong support of the T-E-W bill which would ' give government financial assistance to a program of big-scale building for middle and low income families; ,
The Public Housing Conference at the same time charg
ed that Congressional housing hearings conducted by Republican Sep. McCarthy, Wisconsin and Republican Rep. Gamble, New York, aided by Rep. Fletcher, had been handled in a manner designed to discredit the need for government housing activity. 1
. The conference charged that the schedule for public
housing had been "loaded" at their hearings so that spokesmen for public housing had little time to speak; that attempts were made to "hustle off the witness stand" persons disagreeing with the real estate lobby line of thought; pestering witnesses with technkial questions and hinting that the idea of public housing is either communistic or socialistic. ' Real estate spokesmen, the Conference said, have plugged the line that the American public has an "over-inflated appetite" for homes and has been led by propaganda to expect too much. ' ' Is "GI Joe" expecting "too much" when he appeals to this Republican Congress for a roof over the heads of his loved ones?
