Don'tusTOf f War MapsYet One of those eternal pessimists -who believes war is inevitable could dust off his old World, War II maps today and .try and pick out the spot where World War III could start. - He would already have decided that the chief antagonists will be Russia and the United States. He still would have to decide the minor details of how the two great powers would get embroiled in the shooting. That, of course, would depend on where the shooting started. He would probably consider these possible spots on his map: . 1. Palestine. An un-Holy war is in the offing here and the violence now going on will be only a street brawl compared to what may happen when the British troops pull out next spring unless a United Nations world peace force is ready to move in, enforce the partition and keep order. 2. Korea. The Russians are boycotting the Korean independence decision of U. N. i 3. China. The long dispute between the nationalist government and the Communists has not been resolved. 1 4. The Balkans. Russia is boycotting the U, N.'s Balkan watch-dog commission. . 5. Germany. As a result of last week's failure of the Big Four Ministers', meeting in London the three western Allies United States, Britain and France may consolidate their zcnes and set up a German government. Russia may set up a German government in its zone of occupation. Then, instead of a united Germany striving to take its place in a peaceful industrial world, we would have two German irov-.
ernments, one guarded against Russj a by the western powers, and the other guarded, if ..not .actually occupied -and con
trolled, by the Russians. This obviously would be an eternal powder keg. '
We are still optimistic and hopeful enoueh to believe
that World War III can and must be averted. Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Bikini should have made believers of all the people ,ir) the world. The development' since of even more powerful 'A-bombs, guided missiles and other secret weapons should
inane uie wnuie woria even nrmer oenevers.
We are not too dismayed at some of the failures of the
United Nations. The problems of a world and of peoples
wrecked and wraeked by war cannot be settled overnight,
. out tney can and must be settled at the conference table More war means only more shambles and more problems.
We are not too dismayed at the failure of the Big Four
conference. Other meetings can be held, perhaps at a better
ume, pernaps alter the Marshall Plan has been effected and
urcpe ison the road to recovery. Recovery would have been
speeded by a united Germany, but it can go on without that if we give the necessary support to build, up the nations
which are willing to help themselves.
And the faster Europe recovers, the greater becomes
world opinion against Russian obstructionism. And the speedier the recovery, the less chance wilful men will have
for subjugating the peoples under their evil ideologies

Florida is full of strange sights, as well as beautiful ones. The
most disheartening one was the cemetery beside the Fountain of Youth of all places! The water from the Fountain was warm and
not worth the 4wo-bits it cost, but those skeletons robbed us of any hope we might have had that it was the elixir of youth.
You have received your 1947 Federal Tax sheet by this time.
Do be careful of it, you have paid or will pay soon for it you know, j If you've ever been on the third floor of the postoffice, building in Indianapolis, you know how long those corridors are. Last week the j
tames stretcnea an along tne soutn corrmor ana a tmra oi tne way i back. Monday morning they were stacked high, and there were a j
few yet to be mailed on Friday evening. Employees from every de-
partment of the Revenue offices were drafted for this rush job of j
mailing' out the million and a half returns to the taxpayer. The j name and address, which look out at you through the window in the i envelope is from, last year's file this saves a tremendous lot of typ- '
ing. The number of this slip is the one giv.n your return last year; if a D rates 207536 (presuming they are filed alphabetically) what I would a Y rate? The answer could rightly be: a headache!' i . . !
, i The Christmas decorations around the Circle are very lovely, j
but thpy do bear out my contention that Christmas has become more of a commercial harvest time than a religious holiday. Ayers' win- ' dow displays a mechanical set of reindeers flying across the ,roof
(they had a short the first of the week and refused to work,, but
were going good again at the last), with several dwarfs to assist Santa. Block's showed Santa still in bed; he looked tired but the fairies hovering about will see to it that he makes it around in
time. The Monument base was filled with trees; small ones around
it and a large one at each corner. The stable was on the east side, 1
with the manger, the sheep and The Family reminding us of the Bible story. A choir from one of the churches sang carols there' at the formal opening Monday evening; we heard it over the radio. Even the neon lights about town were red and green; the air was tigley, and there was enough snow to make the streets white, so it
must be Christmas! . !
Indianapolis isn't the only town that can boast of having a girl
that wgars nothing on her legs but goqsepimples I saw another one in Sullivan the other 'day! ;
, 1 Junior was terribly worried about the Santa he saw in one of
the stores, he was SO thin!
' If the new comet near Venus is visible here, I haven't been able to see it. It should be seen in early evening a tit south of west under Venus which is now the evening star.. It appears here as a! dim star, but in Australia its tail streams all the way across the sky..
