John and Jane rode out of the settlement together . . .
Jane said of the house, "It will do."
rrJl-r-'"'", ' "You steal," Pesquitomen said.
NOW, finally, England and the colonies were ready to move against the French. General Forbes planned to march on Fort Duquesne through Pennsylvania, and Washington would lead a detachment of rangers. The old activity returned to Will's Creek. Soldiers filed out of the fort and formed ranks to start the march northward. Jane and John rode out of the settlement together. They were bound for Bedford where John would set up his smithy and act as scout and guide when needed . . . At Bedford, they were forced to buy a huge old house on the outskirts of town. Jane walked through the rooms. "It will do," she said, "until we can go to the valley." John laughed. "Jane, lass," he said, "I'm not sure you learned as much patience as you might have." The English leaders were more careful about their plans
this time than they had"teen on the first ill-fated expedition. They called a grand-scale powwow at Easton with the chiefs of many Indian tribes in an effort to get them to withdraw entirely from the pending conflict. John told Jane, "They can't hope to get the Indians to join us. But if they'd keep out of the fighting altogether, we could.def eat the French." John went on to the fort, leaving Jane with a few servants in the huge house! It was hardly more than an hour . later that there came a knock at the front door. It was Frederick Post, the slight, bearded missionary, and with him was a tall Indian. Post bowed with grave courtesy. "We are here from the Easton meeting," he said, "and there are no rooms in the town. We were told that you might put us up."
Jane stared. The Indian with Post was Pesquitomen, son of Shingas, the Delaware chieftain! Her erstwhile suitorl Around his neck she saw the silver locket the very locket in which she had hidden John's note. Jane's heart thrummed in her chest. What would Pes-( quitomen say to her? She stepped forward and he saw her: Even the severe, inscrutable Indian face revealed for an instant surprise and another emotion. What? . Was it
anger?
1
Jane turned to Mr. Post. Yes, she would put them up.
He must be hungry. If he would go with the servant to the kitchen . . . she and Pesquitomen faced each other. . .. "You Red Morning," he said, accusing, menacing. "You steal, you run aw: 7 . , ' . (Continued tomorrow) '.
