J OHN'S astounding statement that he was "married" to Dorkey took the last of Jane's poor strength. She colapsed at last. She hardly knew when a woman servant got ler into bed. Than days and nights blended weirdly and there seemed no line between waking and sleeping . . . A dozen times a day they fed her with a spoon, thick warm gruel with cream, or soup, or bread softened in warm milk. Very gradually, over many days, her mind began again to function. When she was sitting up, she asked John, "How did you happen to marry' Dorkey?" "Charles the Peddler had to take a French prisoner to Fredericksburg," John said. "The Frenchman told Charles that he heard about your being killed the day you were captured." . . "But you found that pocket I hid at Turtle Creek."

"I found a pocket," John said, "but Dorkey told me it was one she had left there." So that was how Dorkey had fooled him. The second "marriage" was automatically annulled by Jane's return. But now Dorkey would have to find a new roof ... Mr. Hollis and his wife came calling on another day and gave Jane the money bag which she had left so long ago in the Will's Creek cabin. the door of Dorkey 's room open a crack.' "Dorkey," she called. There was no answer. But she knew Dorkey was watching and listening. "You'll have to leave this house now, Dorkey," she" said. "You may take a horse and food but you must go." - With shocking unexpectedness, Dorkey broke. Wild sobs came from the room. When Jane stepped in, she found the girl crumpled on the floor. Jane thought Site has never cried before. She had to stop this terrible weeping. She went down on her knees beside Dorkey. "I have some gold," she said. "I'll give it to you.
