Jane staggered onward, floundering through drifts ,
He carried her to the ca'-in.
She made herself eat slowly.
JANE started alone through the woods. Will's creek was a hundred two hundred miles away. John would say. .she told herself resolutely, not to think about the miles, but just of a step at a time ... a step at a time ... . That first night alone was dreadful. Moonlight filtered through the trees in ghostly patches and she decided not to use her strength to build a fire. Sheurrowed in under a thicket like a creature of the wilds. But the moonlight seemed to take awful forms a shadow moving down on her. She jumped up, screaming, and ran" until she fell. As if by magic, a memory appeared like a picture before her, the calm, good face of Rev. Inglehart. Then Jane prayed, she poured out her fears and her hopes and a new calm and strength came to her . . . The comfort of faith r-arried her on for several more
days. Thfn tlrnifht disappeared in the dull miser" of fatigue and hunger. Ali that kept hv jx wsr phnwes: I must not stop, I must not fail. II 1 stop, .never go on 'again. If I fall, I'll never rife. She floun.lered thrnush drifts. She s'ajeered and "au'Tht branvhej and clung until she repained' her balance. The ' days and night blended into one iong dream .until sue hardly knew whether she walked or crawled. Suddenly her nostrils began to stinj;. Ker blurred mind cleared. It was the odor of wood smoke. Hope gtve her new strength and she crawled on. As she came out of the trees, she saw a cabin with smoke pouring from thc chi.i;- ' ney. She drew in all of the breath she could for a weak halloo. A man came out. He saw her and then he was running
toward h?r crying, "Mrs Frszierl" It was her oH f -:-- l. th Rev. Inglehart Sne fell into his arms and he carried her to th cabin. Jane telt .he blessed warmth of the fire. Me rut niT the heavy coat she wore and helped her into a suit lube and covered her with blankeis Slowly, mastering a greedy iiv.pulre, she drank the soup he offered . . . He had seen Mr. Frazier, but it was months ago, he said. "When he heard that you' were dead," the clergyman sa.d. "he finally gave up his search." , "3' it he found the porket I left for him." "He told me he found a pocket but it proved rot to bVv yo-.us." Jans .nii"d. "We must go to Will s creek and t'tnd him," she said. "A few nrore iwiies will be nothing ..." . ' t Continued JloiiJuy)
