Jane slipped from the tepee.

"You no go," Metusaquah said.

Jane lifted her hand in farewell the trip had begunl

N

OW at last everything was ready for the attempted

escape from the Indian village. Of the males, only

older men and boys were in the camp and though they

were perfectly capable of foiling the captives, they were . not so alert as the warriors ... Cautiously, Jane slipped from the tepee in the late afternoon. The village was quiet. She stole down to the .. river's edge and followed along until she came to where the food was cached and the canoe, hidden. She passed the pit that had held their supplies. It was filled with earth and coveredoyer with leaves. Otto and Elijah already were there, seated in the canoe in the small inlet. ' They greeted her in silence and steadied the noe as she stepped in. There was scarcely room though ihey had

kept their stores at a minimum. She checked the sharpened ax, the food, the quiver of arrows, the two bows there was only one bow! ' ('Elijah," Jane said, "where is the other bow?" He looked blankly down. "I put two in." Had it been left in the pit? Jane turned . . . Metusaquah stood on the slope above her. She held the bow and an arrow aimed at Jane's heart. "You no go," she said. ' Jane stepped back slowly from the canoe. "Metusaquah," she said, "I did not choose to take your man. I have a husband, a man of my own race. I am trying now to return to him." ' The Indian girl's brown eyes were fixed attentively on -Jane's lips but her arms had not moved arid the arrow : was still aimed. Jane went on, her tone urgent. "If I go

now, I shall never return. Pesquitomen will marry you the girl he really loves. He will realize it when I am gone." There was a deadly pause. Then the Indian girl began to speak. "You go," she said. "They miss you, I say you go through woods. Leaves on ground, no mark of foots. They look, no find." Jane wheeled and stepped again into the canoe. Otto began to paddle and they moved out of the hiding place, into the river and swinging with the current. ' The Indiab girl still stood motionless on the bank, the bow,, in hr band. She had forgotten she held it, Jarue would not pauie to ask for it." t Jane lifted her hand in farewell,, and they passed beyond

sight ofher in the trees, trip home had. beun
