I John 45; II John; READING: Romans Proof of a Christian , Lesson for November 30, 1947 'QPEN your Bible to I John 4-5; i Second John; and Acts 4:1-13, ... and you will have the Scripture background for Sunday's lesson. Add to the above passages Romans 8: 1-11, as devotional reading, and you 'will be thinking of the unimpeachable proofs of a Christian. ; J Two men are brought before us as examples of Christian discipleship.i Peter and John had been preaching Christ to the people in Jerusalem, and they were arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin. The rulers and priests scolded them, askI t 1 ing by what power or name they had fM I done this. Peter, txuvmmkJmtimti filled with the Holy Dr. Newton Ghost, answered them: "Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by thet name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. , . . Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." And then follows the verse that reveals the proof that these humbla fishermen were really Christians: "Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they ' took knowledge of them, that they . had been with Jesus." 'The Lord Is My Helper TN HEBREWS 13:6, we find this A revealing statement: 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear." 1 ' The more we study the words of John in Sunday's lesson words that remind us again and again I that God is love, that we love him I ' because he first loved us, that ( : when we love him we are made 1 strong in serving him, the clearer we come to understand the IncV- i r - k 1. n .1. J. 4 1 1 ...1. T.ln. ' and John stood boldly before the Sanhedrin, impressing the court i with the fact that they had been with Jesus. : ' - ' They were not afraid because they were conscious of the presence and bower of God. The Psalmist put it (sublimely when he said, "The Lord lis my Shepherd, I shall not want." When We Walk With God npHE incontestable proof of a Christian is the manner of life lie reveals when he walks with God. j"And this Is love, that we walkj after his commandments. This is the commandment, that, as y have i jheard from the beginning, ye should, iwalk in It," II John 6. When we' walk with. God, in the light of his, word, what a glory he sheds on our! wayl j A group of men sat in the Unlver-i f sity Club in Boston, discussing reli- : Igion. Someone asked Professor Wil liam James to define Christianity. ! T will not attempt a definition of Christianity, but I can give you an (illustration." . j ' And he pointed to Phillips Brooks. There Was no argument. Phillips Brooks was proof positive that Christianity is something vital and practical and real end. effective in. everyday lift. Whs Is a Christian? WE COME now to the question i , which always emerges when we think along this line. Who is a Christian? Look now at I John 4: j 15-21. 1 quote some of these reveal, ing words: - j "Whosoever shall confess that : Jesus is the Son of God, God , dwellcth in, him, and he in God. ; And we have known and believed 1 ' the loye that God hath to vs. God . is love: and he that dwelleth in : ' love, dwelleth in God, and God in :' him." We are not certified as Christians by any man-made creed, nor by any ritual or ceremony. We are certified as Christians by the direct access ' which every soul may have with: God, through Jesus Christ our Great : High Priest forever. , . , " 1 1 Church membership does not make us Christians. Baptism does; not make us Christians. i Anyone may become a Christian, provided be or she is willing to confess their otter lost estate and, . repenting of sin, believe on V , the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Redeemer. Christ is the Au- : thor and the Finisher of our salva- I tion. There is. none other name i wider heaven given among men whereby' we must be saved. i ..."Whosoever will may come." CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES 1 "Ancient and Modern Necromancy, Alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Chrst,' Scientist, on Sunday, November 30. The Golden Text is: "Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your cJreams which ye cause to bfc dreamed. For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the Lord" (Jeremiah 29: 8, 9). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentilen" (Acts 13:45, 46). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from (the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the -Scriptures", by Mary Baker Eddy: ' "Persecution of all who have spoken DuiiiGLiuug new aiiu ucuter ui vjuu has not only obscured the light of the ages, but has been fatal to the persecutors. .Why ? Because it has hid from them the true idea which has been presented" (p. 660). ST. MARY CHURCH Mass Schedule Nov. 30 Sullivan, 8:00. Shelburn, 10:00. PENTECOST CHURCH 502 North Court Street. You'd be a stronger man, a sironger woman her .mind! ...
Those worries and fears that walk forever with' us . . . they would fall behind. The borrows that seem' an inescapable part of life they would suddenly be far away. And all of the boredom and drabness of life, that make each day too much like the others . . . they, too, would disappear. Today would seem a privilege tomorrow, a promise. If you could read her mind you'd be a child againl And as a child you'd kneel and really pray. You'd know it makes a difference when we believe in God. You'd know there is a Way through all the clouds of life. And. though you might not know the meaning of the word you'd ha ve a faith that gives each prayer an Answer. We cannot, nor should we want to be children again. But that faith, so real in childhood, can be found again in later. life. And whenever we find it , . . we're stronger men and women The Church can help you re-establish that faith,
