Arthur St. Clair was born In Scotland but came to America with Admiral Boscawen. He served with distinction in the British Army under Amherst at Louisburg and Wolfe at Quebec, then resigned his commission and settled in western Pennsylvania. He joined the Colonial
Army in 1776 with the rank of colonel. He was a member of the Continental Congress 1785-87, was president in the latter year, and from 1783 to 1789, was president of the Pennsylvania State Society of the Cincinnati, in honor of which he named the city of Cincinnati in 1790. Two of us decided that birthdays were the days we should give gifts instead of getting them. t
r . . I did my bit last week to aid inflation. I'm still mad at myself for it, too, I was hunting flexoglass for the henhouse windows; 18c seemed, too high, so I hunted elsewhere but didn't find any at any price. Went back next day and paid 19cand don't tell me that it cost the merchant the extra cent he charged me! But that is not all I bought a fruitcake for Christmas and didn't shop around. That time it would hae paid me to have spent the extra time, for I paid a dollar more than I would have had to pay at one df the other stores! There must be some truth in that old saying, ' "Fools and their money are soon parted," but who wants to spend all their time, looking for the cheapest place to buy, especially after an experience like the first one? When one begins counting up their blessings and the many luxuries, we have now that we didn't use to have, it is hard to visualize much left to hope for. Maybe we Can concentrate on using to good advantage what we already have. t m Had you noticed the many musical treats that have been at Indiana State convocations lately? Visitors used to be welcomed; I intend to see if they still are. . This fellow who persists in backing out onto the highway can be thankful that my brakes are good yet. He surely is planning to lead the procession soon, wearing his new wooden overcoat with silver handles. I may be, too. . Excessive fatigue can be remedied best by lying flat with a pillow under the knees; then begin at the crown of the. head and relax every muscle down to the tips of the toes. . . . Never take aspirin unless you can lie down for 15 minutes immediately after taking it. . . . Tisn't the loss of sleep that hurts a person, it is the worrying because you aren't sleeping. i 1 Were thanks with every gift expressed, . Each day would be Thanksgiving; Were gratitude its very best, ; , Each life would be thanksliving! Chauncey Piety.

HAROLD E- STASSEN opens his formal campaign for the 1948 GOP presidential nomination by calling for "an increasingly better way of life for ourselves and others" In an address before an audience of more than 5,000 in Milwaukee. (Internationa!) The checkered beetle was so named because of its variegated markings. Adults are found on flowers and on trunks of trees, where they live on nectar and sweet sap. The larvae live under the bark and feed on woodboring larvae, even penetrating into the burrows in search of them. Some infest the hives of bees, where they devour the young bees, burrowing their way from cell to cell, and still others feed on dead animal matter. In the Homeric poems. Proteus is a prophetic old man of the sea who tends the seal flocks of Poseidon (Neptune), and has the gift of endless transformations.
