There were nasty statements made, about the time the' state legislature was in .session in 1947, that there' had beeh irregularities in disposal of State Police autos, said to have been sold at ridiculously Jow prices to, dealers in an inflated used car market. , i These charges, coupled with the scandal in which a public jdefender admitted "shaking down'! a prisoner in a state penal institution and more recently with an admitted and "complete break-dewn of Republican law enforcement in Indianapolis and Marion county, where violent death and criminar assault have become the ordinary rather than the unusual, have placed a stigma on state and local law enforcement that has brought a wave of protest from every corner cf the state. ...... Already irate because of the reckless spending of the ccsfliest state administration in Indiana's history; because of a nuisance tax on cigarettes; because. of a general assembly that, like the Eightieth Congress, left no dcubt that ,it was special-interest controlled, Indiana voters are .now .biding their time until the primary and general elections of next year. Then, Indiana Republican leaders will receive the answer to their oft-repeated question of 1946 "Had .Enough?"
