Jane saw John's special mark., . IT was early in the year that John built a temporary place on Evitt's Creek for them. Jane was going through tneir things, preparatory to packing, when she came across a chest of Eulit's. She thought John would say I must give it to Dorkey but I shan't. Her extravagance ruined him. Perhaps I can send something to his family. . . . Carefully she sorted the clothes and articles in the chest. A paper fluttered to the floor. She saw John's special mark a J and F joined at the bottom and she read it. It said: Eulit. Take wagon at once to Turtle Creek. Drop into ravine across pom springhouse. Deliver all guns to man who will meet you there. Password, Lancaster. JF. Jane stared. The happenings at Turtle Creek had taken on a new and terrible fare. John had ordered Eulit to sell

those guns? Had he killed him then to cover his own treachery? Suddenly she knew she must confront him with this damning evidence. She spun around. Dorkey stood at her elbow and snatched at the note. "Give me that!" she cried. Jane's eyes blazed. "If you ever breathe a word of this," she said, "I'D kill you." Jane put the note in her bodice as Dorkey fell back. Then Jane ran to the stables calling to Bradley, another of John's helpers, to saddle a horse. When he heard her plan to ride to John, he said doggedly, "I'll ride with you." He had his rifle as they rode out. But midway to John's place, a sudden horrible whooping smote their ears. Indians! Savages leaped out on the road, grabbing their bridles. Before Bradley could raise his rifle, a brave shot him and he tumbled from the saddle.

Jane was placed behind the leader for the long ride.

Two who held Jane swung her from her horse to a place behind their leader. She recognized Shingas, the Delaware chieftain. "But," she cried, "I am John Frazier's wife." "Yes," he said. "John Frazier bad friend." With a rush, they were off down the trail toward the wilderness. After hours of riding, Jane was near fainting. But they did not stop 'that night. They did not pause until they reached the deserted house at Turtle Creek. - They left Jane almost unconscious on1 the floor. With her last strength she removed the brick from the fireplace. 1 Then she put the criminating note in a locket about her neck, locked it and placed the key in a detachable pockel which she took from her waist. The pocket she put in the cache, replacing the brick. John might find it and know she had been there. . , . (Continued Monday)
