Lashes were given the drinkers . . .

"Supplies are coming!" he called.

JANE'S momentary suspicion of John's feelings toward the French passed. No more was said. He was busy, and Jane was thrilled as the British prepared to drive the intruders from the Ohio valley. A hundred Indians joined the British forces and staged a war dance for the red-coated soldiers from England. Shouting, prancing, their bodies gleaming in the firelight, they whirled in the clearing. Tomahawks swung and scalping knives flashed. . . . For long hours afterwards, soldiers and'settlers moved in groups uncommonly close. ... . Now the pay was slow in coming from the colonies. with the General and his staff. He showed a complete list of the weapons he had manufactured and the ammunition available, and compared his gun with a Charleville rifle captured from the French. , But he stormed angrily back to the cabin when the conference was over.' He smiled and took her in his arms, holding her head against his shoulder. The longer the soldiers waited, the more quarreling there was in the fort. Braddock's rages rose to fresh heights. Two hundred lashes were ordered for every soldier befuddled by drink. .. . ' As the August heat settled over the community, tempers became even shorter. Braddock stomped the length of the

fort cursing out the slothfulness of colonial soldiers, and declaring that if food and money had not arrived before two more days had passed, he would leave the place, take his British troops, and repair to the coast For discipline, Braddock had the men drill in the hot '. sua all morning. Less than an hour after the midday meal of Indian corn and bitter greens brought from the wood3 he had set them to drilling again, with full equipment. ; Three of the colonials fainted, and the general ordered , them dragged from the parade 'ground and to be given punishment when they recovered. Thus the sound was triply welcome when the mount in the tower first glimpsed the caravan of one hundred wagons moving from the east. "Supplies are coming!" he called down excitedly. . . .
