Ye Are Net Under the

Law, But Under Grace" "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ." John 1:17. We are not under the law, but under grace which came by Jesus Christ. That grace .is set forth in the gospel: " . . the ministry, wliich I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God." Acts 20:24. Since such

I grace came not by Moses, we can appreciate this reading: "For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God j raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto vou. And it shall come to

pass, that every soul, which wul not hear that

prophet, shall be destroyed from among the

people.". Acts 3:22, 23. And this" from Jesus: "He that rejecteth rne, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the ,word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." John 12:48.'

Paul, in his writings to the Romans, has

much to say about grace and the gospel. He gives us in Rom. 1:16 what might be called ihe

"Golden Text" of that epistle: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the

power of God unto salvatioa to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." The gospel of Christ is God's- power to save. Hence, the grace of God is appropriated

through the gospel for beyond all disputation the consummation of God's grace is our salvation. .

When Paul stages that the gospel is God's power to save every one who believes, does

that spell "faith only"? How could it when the

same Paul in the same chapter (verse 5) speaks of "obedience to the faith," and in Rom. 10:16

grace

gospei. inerefore, to appropriate God's we must obey the gospel of Christ.

In Rom. 2:4 we read, " . . Despisest thou the riches of his (God's) goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?" Repentance involveS(,a change of mind, followed by a change of conduct in life. Faith supplies the motive for repentance and therefore must precede it. Anything involved in obeying the gospel other than repentance?, "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in 'thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt hp sa

the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Rom. 10:9, 10. See Acts 8:37. Further in Rom. 65 and 4 we read, "know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up' from the dead, by the glory of the Father, even to we also should walk in newness of life." Thus, Paul tells us in verses 17, 18 and 22 of the same chapter. " . . Ye have obsyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye

the servants ' of righteousness." "But

made free from sin, and become

servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holi

ness, and the end everlasting life."

In the light of the r.bove scriptures, how

can any one maintain. Imply or even hint that

God's grace is such that we, as free moral

ac-ents, have no obligation in the matter of our

salvation.
