They gazed fondly toward the blockhouse . . . JANE and John set out on horseback for Will's Creek to bring them word that England had ordered a military fort built there. They arrived during a lovely sunset and gazed fondly down toward the blockhouse and the sweep to the river ... Greetings in the blockhouse were noisy and cordial. They had had news of the marriage, and of course congratulated them, and wished them happiness. A beaming girl placed in their hands steaming noggins of hot water and spice and rum. " ,. . " . ' ". - Mst of the settlers, John was told, were still waiting to go baqk to the Ohio-Valley as soon as the trouble was over. John said, "I shoulcf think the French Would see there's no use trying to run 'em out. They .get rid of one. bunch and the first thing you know they're. back and more with them."

General Braddock at last had landed with his troop.

"He's a gambler," Sipes said.,.

Eulit Ames, though still quiet and serious, had turned into a good worker in John's gun shop. He did not speak of Dorkey but Jane still had hopes of making a match there a match that would also keep Dorkey out of her own way. Two days before Christmas, an express ridef came into the settlement. He brought great news: The Royal Army had been formed in England, and its commander" named. General Edward Braddock. ' It was March when the next exciting item arrived. General BraddcJc had landed at Hampton with his troops. Excitement, like the zigzag of lightning ran through the -settlement. As Jane listened, she could picture the scene the great ships in the harbor, the small boats pulling for the docks, the crowds and General Braddock himself srhil- j .ingly accepting the official welcome1.... . , , '

But that night in the blockhouse, one voice was raised itf criticism. If was the voice of Lester Sipes, a thin, dark; dandy, who was as vicious as he was lazy. Sipes spent much" time around the blockhouse since the return of Dorkey and this night he eyed her evilly. As he watched, he droned along bitterly. . .' "This Braddock," Sipes said, "is a gambler and a scound rel.- It must be a sorry blow to him to be sent to fight sav-; ages in America. He must be much in need of the money to" be paid him for the job.".. . ' . ' Jane felt a terfse" dram unfolding as Dorkey" moved artfuUy -about" arid Lester Sipes watched her sullenly. When' , Sipes' sister-came in and spoke' to" him"; he' snarled at her', "Leave me be " ,v
