A gig drew up to Jane's home . . . FOR another week after word of the capture of some Englishmen by the French Jane heard nothing from John Frazier. She was sick with worry. Then a letter from a friend mentioned that he was safe. ' Now Jane was angry. Why did he not write or come? It was almost time to leave for England with her mother and Urtele Horace. She would have no more excuses . .. It was even worse when she heard that a party containing both John and Dorkey had passed through Winchester an4 gone on to Philadelphia. He had left her no word, Jane raged! Very well, she decided, I'll go back to England with Uncle Horace. She was helping with the final packing when a horse was heard outside. A gig drew up with a gentleman erect on the chair and a liveried slave holding the reins. "My goodness,

She thought, "You jackanapes!"

who can this be?" exclaimed Mrs. Bell. "Jane, hurry and change your dress." But Jane just stared fascinated. It couldn't be. But it was John Frazier' She had always seen himjn the roush clothes of the frontier. Now he was dressed in the height of fashion, a belaced gentleman. He bowed as Mrs. Bell invited him in. He was grave and ' gallant and charming. But Jane saw the smirk in his eyes, "John, you jackanapes!" she said under her breath as he bowed Mrs. Bell to a chair. When he was offered a liqueur, John said to Mrs. Bell, "To the charming mother of a beautiful daughter." John, John! Jane thought, and hid her growing amusement. That short visit was highly successful. John came again on following days. But Jane was distant until they had a moment

alone. "Why did you not write me?" she demanded. "I did," John swore. Dorkey, he said, had been merefy a member of a traveling group and meant nothing to him, Jane wondered if Dorkey had intercepted tue letters, and she forgave him ... When John said to Mrs. Bell and Uncle Horace, "I ask you for Jane's hand," they almost choked in hasty acceptance. In fact they were happy to sail for England, leaving all arrangements to John. I Jane and Johnf Frazier were married in the parlor of her home by the Rev. Mr. Partridge. They had a glorious August for a honeymoon. 'And their happiness was complete when they heard England was sending troops against the French. "Help at last," Jane said. "Glory be" (Continued tomorrow) .
