Christian Conduct
Lesson for November 2, 1947

CHRISTIAN standards of conduct must be understood as Christ's standards, not man's standards. Our lesson makes this quite clear when James declares,
"My brethren, , be not many masters (judges), knowing that we shall receive -the greater condemnation,''
Vi 4 goes on ta 3
Wiethe! iu tsiupuasize the truth that man is by nature inclined to "run away," even as the horse when he is
not bridled, or the ship when it is not controlled. Which brings the first practical lesson that of the tongue. "The
tongue is a mue memDer, says James, "and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!" , , Tha Words I Say TN PROVERBS 8:7, we read, "Mymouth should utter truth." And again in Proverbs 25:11, we read, "a word fitly spoken Is like apples of gold in pictures of silver." Which adds up to this: .The words we say have much to do with what people ' think of our standard of nnntif Tf wa snaalr Wrtrrte nf tniH
and kindness, we need not be concerned what people will think of us. , -Boys and girls who guard their
tongues wm nave mends. Boys and girls who speak words of envy, prejudice and falsehood will be shunned. The Right Words WHAT is in our hearts determines what we say and do. ' Therefore, if we are to speak the right words, our hearts must be rightright with God. , I have just come from a playground where a group of junior boys and girls were having a picnic. I got there at the moment when a baseball game was in the decisive ninth inning. One of the junior boys - was umpire. He called a pitched

pleasing words. They saw me standing on the sidelines, and asked me to settle the matter. I had not seen the pitched ball closely enough to express an opinion. ' The boy who had spoken most sharply went to the boy who was umpire, took his hand, and said, "It's okay with me. I am sorry I said what I did." That boy had the right attitude. He turned wrong -words into right words, because his heart was right. -. The Power of Words PPEAK not one against another," writes James 4:11. Two teenage girls were walking home from school. One spoke bitterly to the other of a third girl. They parted at the corner, and the girl who had spoken the bitter words of her neighbor slipped and fell as she passed the home of the girl about whom she had been speaking. The neighbor girl rushed to her side', helped her into the house where her mother dressed the ankle. Waiting for her father to come with the car, the girl who had spoken bitter words began to cry. Thinking that her neighbor was crying from the pain of the ankle, the girl who had been bitterly assailed spoke sympathetically to her neighbor. . "Will you forgive meT" cried out the distressed girl. , "Forgive you?" "For the unkind words J spoke .. about you to Mary. O, I am sorry, sorry." ; v . 11 Forgiven, they became trusted friends. :, : X Words Reflect Character THIS lesson, should summon every heart to utter the prayer of the Psalmist: v "Let the words of my mouth and' the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer," Psalm 19:14. Our words reflect our character. Christ's standard of conduct calls for words wisely chosen. Longfellow put it well when he wrote: I shot an arrow into the air, It fell to earth, I knew not where For, so swiftly it flew, the sight Could not follow it in its flight. j breathed a song into the air, It fell to earth, I knew not where; For who has sight so keen and strong, Thai it can follow the flight of song? , Long, long afterward, in an oak, 1 found the arrow still unbroke; " And the song from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend. ; (Copyright bf the International Council tit Religious Education on behalf oi 40 Protestant denominations. Our First Pair of Shoe
3
'A great king, so the legend goes, once stepped on a thorn in his garden. In a furious rage he ordered his prime minister to cover his entir kingdom with leather. "Your, Majesty," replied the wise prime minister, "let me cover your feet with leather, and wherever you go you will be protected." And so the first pair of shoes was made! The little fellow whose first pair of shoes appealed to our photographer has a long way to travel. His journey through ufe will not be free of thorns. And he'll need more than shoes to make that journey!
. . ... He'll need to develop, that spiritual fiber which will do for his character what the firs 1 pair of shoes did for the king's feet. A man can't carpet the whole world but he can acquire the faith and courage whsch will enable him to climb life's most rugged trails. - The Church brings such qualities to the life of man. The Church points the way to happy, wholesome living for the grown-up with the burdens of life on his shoulders and for the little tot in his first pair of shoes!
