ilpostle of Better Things Lesson for October 13, 1947
Dr
Newton
THIS lesson opens, Hebrews 3:1-8, with the explanation that Jesus Christ is the minister of better things in that he is the apostle and high priest of our profession, perfectly faithful to him that appointed him. The comparison is made with Moses, who was also faithful, but within a very small circle as contrasted with the Son of God. Called to God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec, Christ, the
author of eternal salvation, dealt no longer with symbols, but offered himself as the perfect lamb to take away our sins. "And for this cause h is the mediator
t ; & (p i Ue new covenant ' , i (testament), that
uy mgans oi aeam, for the redemptions of the transgressions that were un
der the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance," Hebrews 9:15. Jesus and the Eib'e JESUS is introduced in Matthew " 4:1-4, as he quotes the Old Testament to Satan in the wilderness temptation. Having been reared by a God-fearing mother, Jesus was familiar with the Bible as a child. What is the best thing any parent can do for his or her child? I would answer' without hesitation? Teach them to bide God's words in their hearts in the impressionable years of youth. A Bilile verse learned in youth will serve through all life's testing situations. "I will not forget Thy Word, Psalms 119:16. Ha Helps Us Use the Bible hpHE better ministry .of Jesus is.
A reflected in the fact that, "We have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens. Jesus the1 son of God. . . . For we have notan high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need," Hebrews 4:14-10. Study the example of Jesus In his answers to Satan in the wilderness temptation, and He will teach us when and what to say to Satan. We are not dependent upon our wisdom and words. Our great high priest will supply wisdom and words to match any situation that Satan ever presents. 7 think of a sipry of a imiior boy, recently accused of stealing. The boy teas the victim of a wicked man who sought to tr.ru circumstantial evidence upon hint to cover his own sin. Tl.ie ,bny told vie that he was ivnocenl. I went with him to the juvenile court. 7 he judge asked him if he was guilty, lie Inohei straight into the eyes of the judge and said: rS:r, I hare not sinned. Who conrictc'h me n this charge?" 'I he r;;a:i drop lied bis bead, and said: "Your honor, I ash for the privilege of withdrairing the charge." V.h t2v:c in Cur tt T WILL put my laws on their hearts, and upon their minds also will I 'write them." Hebrews 10:15. Jesus declares, "I do always the things that please him." and he enables us, by his r;iee, to do the father's will by his indwelling in our hoaris. Thus, his will becomes the :;w cf our lives, through the grace of Jesus Christ. It is imposfibie for us to keep tJ-.e ton- perfectly, but Christ, the b'llr Christ, becomes our rl-;!;iooiisiirss, at;d then his law is ;cpl ty his Riacc. In the olden times, men claimed to keep the irttcr of the law, without the spirit, as in fue case of Moses. Now, through the offering of Christ, ive ire enabled to satisfy the spirit of Hie law. The Sufficient Christ THIS Icrson should enhearfen every trusting child of God, since it makes clear that, "He is able to save unto the uttermost them that draw near unto God through him," Hebrews 7:25. He is not only able, but yearns i to save unto the uttermost. He i vills to save everyone. God has I done everything he can do to save every sentient soul on this earth, Those who go to hell do so be. ' cause they decide tetgo to hell.. It ; is .not the pteasifrfe of Goa Jftft A$r j should, perish, but tivat all should ! repent and be saved. - .. ;

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES "Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, October 12. The Golden Text is: "He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death" (Psalms 68:20). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father" (John 14:12). "And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people. There camo also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one" (Acts 5:12, 16).. The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "Through all the disciples experienced, they became more spiritual and understood better what the Master had taught" (p. 34).. "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God, a spiritual understanding of Him. an unselfed love" (p. 1).

We are awe'd Hy science! Our life saving sulfa 'drugs, penicillin, radar, the cataclysmic atom bomb, even our nylon hose, all are results of scientific research, In laboratories all over our land scientists gaze through" microscopes at tiny organisms too small for human sight and there find the basis for many gifts of health and countless 'comforts and conveniences for dnilv: living. Through telescopes we may view the distant starsl i But there is a vast area of life above and beyond scientific sight. There are eternal values which cannot be seen with the physical eyespiritual truths which must be accepted on faith. It is onlv by faith that we pan be lead to a higher plan of spiritual reality. ' Faith and sight are not opposed to each other. Rather 'does eacK complement the other and together they make an invaluable contribution to the well-rounded life. The Church Has the faith-finding instruments for our use. You and your children should worship there for greater vision.
